Hi there,
I am new to TEFL, but have recently been offered a job with this school through email and a phone call, for september. I am, understandably, a little worried about the speed of the offer, after reading some of the posts on here.
Has anyone heard of this school, known as 'the primary school attached to the Huludao teachers training college'??
Thanks,
Clairey |

Not sure what you mean by 'speed of the offer'. Could you elaborate please? Did they send you a contract after the phone which had come after an e-mail or two being exchanged in a few days?
Do you have a web site for the school? I think this is the college's web site: www.hldsjsjx.com (sorry it's all in Chinese). The college seems to be a place that trains current teachers so they can get better teaching positions. As for the primary school, it is probably one of the schools owned by the college where the college's students go for their month-long practicum.
[ADDED]
OK, I found this site www.abroadchina.org/ad/hld.htm and the only thing I don't like what the school has to offer is this:

Who pays the water, gas, electricity, Internet, telephone bills?
A: You do. |
Try to negotiate for a monthly allowance. If not, you could lose a few hundred RMB a month in winter time should you use an electric heater. |

Hi...thanks for your prompt reply.
I looked at the address you put but of course hav no clue if its that place!!! the school is definately primary and has kids aged 6-14 apparently.
The job was offered to me after three emails over a period of a week and a half, which included me sending copies of degree, cv and passport page, and a phone call with a new zealander who recruits for the school. He asked me a few questions and i asked him about the syllabus and the kids. Then he emailed the next day to say he'd reccommended me and that another teacher from the school would be in touch. Which he has with a copy of their contract and medical form...
I know the school has adverts posted around on eslemployment.com and esljobs.biz has anyone else used these websites with success? I think they are looking for someone else too.
The thing about the bills... they said it shouldn't cost more than 100RMB a month for them... and are going to pay me 5000RMB a month...it doesn't seem like a lot...?
thanks,

5000 RMB would be more than enough to live on in Huludao. From what I hear, it's a relatively small place but close enough to Beijing (5 hours) and Shenyang (about 3 hours) for weekend trips. Things within Huludao itself would be very cheap compared to bigger cities. |

Heating costs can be more than a "few hundred." It cost me about 1700RMB to use an electric oil heater during last winter. That was just for one room of a three bedroom flat. There may be cheaper ways to heat.
I'd like to know what they are. |

Oil filled electric radiators - and they give off a much nicer "healthy feeling" heat (not that dry air con heat). But they cost about 500 each for 11 ribbed radiators - and you may find yourself needing at least 2 of them in a decent sized room that has half decent windows. No good for those who just take year contracts - because of their bulk and cost - but a good idea for those who have their own places and are looking for a cheaper heat alternative.
I reckon the cost of operating these are half the air-con cost. |

Is that 100 for all the bills combined, or 100 for each bill...? As I remember, back in 2005 I was paying RMB 98 per month for combined ADSL and telephone landline; between 50 and 200 a month for electricity; much less for gas (I don't cook much); and what seemed like a few jiao per year for water.
Get the bills paid by the school if you can. |

Just finished 3 years in Huludao and 5K is average. As well most of the apartment I have lived in or visited had hot water radiator heating. Plenty warm enough for me. Hold out for the heat and water and gas. That has been standard in all offers i got form there. Phone and internet will probably be yours. As far as timing, many schools are pretty quick. I got phone call within 12 hours of e-mail and was offered job within 36 hours. Lasted at same school for 3 years. |
