I'm not very well versed in cheap hotels here because I've never stayed in one (though I am in search of one in the Tunel/Galata area for my parents to stay when they come next month-- any suggestions??) but I do know it is fairly easy to find a room in a flat- check out mymerhaba.com, sahibinden.com, and other websites. Also, I think there are noticeboards with such things in a few cafes and bookshops (the Alman kitabevi on Istiklal?). If you work at EF Levent or Beyoglu, they have a really nice new teachers' lojman in Ortakoy, with a terrace and sea view (am a bit jealous, even though I'm glad I don't share with 5 others!). |

What's the deal with that Yaramaz .. I know someone who'll be working at EF for the summer who was told about accommodation in Ortaokoy .. is that likely to be the same place ...
Have they got AC ... is it a new building ... newly done out .. any info would be greatly appreciated ... |

The new lojmen seems to be quite nice so far (though I don't live there so can't comment). It's a big 3-floor flat, with 6 bedrooms, including one transit room for new teachers when they first arrive, and the other rooms for longer term stays. There is a teras, sea view, digiturk, all mod cons, and brand new furniture (apparently the sofa set is one of those intriguingly cartoonish Istikbal styled cherry red/cream things). The teachers pay about 450 or something, all inclusive (heating, water, electricity, phone, cleaner, etc). A few of my colleagues are there and it sounds quite decent- it's a real flat, not a dorm with curfew or lock in or whatever. It's up the hill in Ortakoy, which is a bit lacking in amenities like a bakkal or tekel but close enough to public transportation for getting around. |
