|
|
Hello all,
I would like to attend some university anywhere in the world as a full-time student and get a Master's degree, IN ONE YEAR, suitable for getting university jobs as an English instructor in non-English-speaking countries.
I have a Bachelor's of Education, area of concentration Secondary (that is, middle and high school ages), English major, French minor, from a Canadian university; plus, a permanent lifetime teaching certificate for that province gained through sufficient years of teaching there.
I AM NOT INTERESTED IN ONLINE OR 'DISTANCE' EDUCATION. I know myself too well to kid myself that I would ever finish a single course if left to study 'at my own pace.' I wish to be a full-time, on-campus, fully-paid-up student. So please don't clog up this thread with online or distance suggestions.
Is there anywhere in the world where I can do a suitable one-year degree for a total cost (full tuition plus one year's living expenses) of less than $20,000 USD? That is, from an acceptable university? |

Look to Europe.
There are 1 year Master degrees, notice there is no s in it? at several European universities. The programs have gotten some flack internationally because in a move to attempt to standardize course lengths through out Europe, they've introduced 3 year Bachelors followed by a 1 year Master. The the criticism it that these graduates have only done 4 years of post secondary studies, which would only earn them a BA in many parts of the world. I have no idea how much they cost. |

Just curious. Where did you find your references for that one? I have yet to find conclusive information to convince me that master degree, masters degree, or master's degree is the best choice. I've seen it used all three ways on web sites of big-name universities.

I've been told the same story by a Scottish teacher that worked here; she had a Master (no S) degree, and that it was equivalent to a North American Bachelors degree - but that people often mistook it for being equivalent to an NA Masters. |

Ben,
I met that there are degrees in Europe called a Master. They are generally shorter than Master's of Arts or other Master's degrees that are offered in North America and at some British Universities. The Master is shorter. |

I'm currently getting an MA in Applied Linguistics/TESOL at a US university. I will have finished all my course work in 4 semesters, which is actually 1 year and 3.5 months. However, the cost of the classes is under $20,000 USD- the cost is around $1,800 per semester for a full load of classes. This does not factor in living expenses, which I'm not sure if you're including in the amount you mentioned. The upside of where I am studying is that there are graduate assistantships which offer you a tuition waiver as well as a small stipend each semester. I paid for my classes the first semester I was in school. The remaining semesters will be covered for me. I am a resident, so I don't pay out of state tuition (which would increase your cost to about $8,000 per semester), but if I were from out of state, that would still be covered by the waiver. If you want more info, let me know. It's a great program with some professors who are pretty well known in the field of linguistics and TESL. |
