Has anyone worked in both Korea and Hong Kong? I finished a 3 month
gig in Korea and didn't totally like it. Hong Kong seems better in pretty
much every way but I would guess you'd have to work a lot harder in Hong Kong also. OK, so what do you think?

Hey,

I like Hong Kong much better than Korea. It's cleaner, more efficient, people don't stare at you like you're a monkey, it's better architecturally speaking, and many people can speak English. That being said, I did spend two years in Korea, so I must have liked something about it. I did find it was easier to get to know Korean people. I don't have any Chinese friends other than the partners of my foreign friends.

As for teaching, I taught in hogwans in Korea (utter crap). I now teach in a public school. I can't say I'm too enthused about Hong Kong's education system either. Hence why I'm returning to my own country to teach (real school) when my contract finishes. They do expect more professionalism in Hong Kong than compared to Korea. (Although, the professionalism in HK schools could be up for debate). On the plus side, I have never been screwed over once by my school here. Furthermore, there are government bodies available to help you out in English if your school does try anything.

If you're looking for a place in Asia that feels like 'home', I'd say Hong Kong is a good choice. Every type of food is available here, great foreign supermarkets, etc. I definitely feel like this is 'my city'. In Korea, I felt like an outsider all of the time. But, it was 'one hell of a ride'....
