So why would Batam have lots of female English teachers who work at night? Have the men taken over all the day classes? |

Disclaimer - I'm the DOS at REAL Language Training Batam.
I've been here for 3+ months and I've found that there isn't really that much to do here. There is a fairly large expat community, but not a real organization. There is a Hash here, and I'm waiting to get information on it. Also, once a month, one of the bar owners holds a "Bule Bike Day" where we drive to Waterfront City or somewhere like that.
As far as outdoor activities, there's the luxury hotels, which have watersports, ziplines, etc.
The malls have movie theaters, there's plenty of golf courses and driving ranges.
Food here isn't too bad, Maharaja Curry House is nice.
Um, not a whole lot more. |

jhemmila, surely you're trying to socialize with locals and not just other expats in Batam? How are your language skills? Do you go to local performances? Have you taken arts courses in Sekupang?
Do you have friends to invite you to Ramadan activities? Now is the best time of year to learn about your Muslim acquaintances/colleagues, their families, and their customs. You'll make friends for life. (And you can do the same during Chinese New Year with the others. ) |

Now see, I don't know about any of this stuff. My bahasa is ok, I just don't really know where to go to do any of that kind of stuff. Transport infrastructure here is quite poor compared with bigger cities, so it's a bit confusing to find out how to get to Sekupang or points west. I usually take ojeks, or get ripped off by taxis.
Where in Sekupang is this place, anyways?

Sekupang is the on the western side of the island, where the PELNI boats dock and one of the ports for fast boats for Singapore.
Batam is a very disjointed kind of place. |

The Padepokan Seni is the arts centre in Sekupang. A lot of regional conferences and other events also occur there. |

Batam is known as the place unimaginative Singaporeans come over to do, what they cannot do in their own Country.
Basically that means drink cheap beer, "cheap" Cigarettes and hook up with the local "ladies." One reason its the second most expensive place in Indonesia, for living costs.
But there is another side to Batam- aside from Nagoya and the all night clubs and bars. Its a road that takes you to a ferry port, where you can hit the sea and visit the real Indonesia.
Otherwise you end up "cloned" resorts designed to keep their Singapore clientele happy, paying Singapore prices for drinks etc, or in downtown Nagoya with the low lifes that ply the area- Preman (Most Indonesians call them), and the Singaporeans who want to party. |
