Ok so I wanted to say thanks for answering my questions in my last post! I know they were stupid to some/most of you and at the time(I know, I should have worded them better), I had just started doing research on Taiwan and just wanted to hear what you guys had to say...Right now I just need as much information as I can get in only a little amount of time. So thank you for putting up with me
And I have another question:
Ok so I want to apply at a school in Taiwan, but in the online application asks for my passport number. How safe is it to give these companies a passport number and on an online application no less?
I don't feel comfortable giving them my passport number until it is official that I'm getting employment and a work permit...
Can I decline giving them my passport number until things are somewhat official??
It's for Kojen by the way. This only an idea because like most of you said, most new people want a failsafe and right now I just want to make sure I get paid on time and to have health insurance...
But don't get me wrong, I am only 10% sure of this...I am still going to research other schools.
And just some info about me...I am an American living in Amsterdam with my parents and I just want to get out of here and move to Asia and finally be on my own! I have a BA and will be getting my CELTA (hopefully) in July...

I wouldn't give them my passport tnumber. But then again, I wouldn't apply for a job from overseas. Get hee and hit the ground running. You sound like you are at the beginnin of a great adventure. Be adventurous. Jump without a net. You'll thank me in th long run as you'll have avoiding wasting a year at The Big Yellow School Bux.
But if you do get and take a job with KoJen, avoid School #4 for kids in Taipei. That's the one by Tai Da University. Trust me on this. Your year will be most unpleasant. |

Sage advice from the Toe.
Iit sounds bizarre to travel to the other side of the globe hoping you will find a job, but once you're here you'll see it makes pefect sense. |

As with almost everything in Taiwan....
Whatever seems the most illogical, is exactly how it should be done! |

If you come here without a job, you should:
1) Be willing and able to hop to HK during the visa process;
2) Be willing to not take the first thing that comes along (otherwise, you may as well sign from overseas. Seeing the place before signing does have value, but what will make or break your stay will likely pop up later from something you couldn't have weeded out through a simple visit);
3) Be willing to break your contract and find a better job before the first year is finished (the mindset of [I'd say] most people who recommend just coming here is that you can take whatever you can find and just leave it when you find something better. A bit trashy?);
4) Be willing to live outside of a main city at first, or be looking for less than fulltime work, or be okay with piecing together hours at different schools, or be willing to do number 3. |
