Hey,

I'm about to move into a place, and the contract says I can't have any guests live in the place.

Is that really ever enforced?

That's actually pretty standard as apartment contracts go in Japan. If you decide to have someone live with you and you let them know about it I would think it should be okay, they may have to add their name to the contract, you might get charged a little more but I doubt it. When you go to a hotel and you get a room for the night, for one person, they also will not allow you to let someone else stay with you because its a single, although that doesn't mean I followed that rule :p ...Asgard

Also forgot to add if you are just talking about someone visiting then a few weeks is fine, if its going to be a few months then you need to let your rental agency know about that and get that cleared.

PS..You could get lucky and not get caught having another person live with you but you never know if someone might come by or not, or someone might talk, a neighbor perhaps.

Just don't say anything and keep your head down about it. If anyone asks, just deny it.

My house contract actually says I'm not allowed to own a piano. That's what it says, 'no pets, no pianos'. (In Japanese, of course). I have an electric piano, and my Japanese girlfriend wanted to rush straight to the estate agent and declare it. What is this unconditional honesty about?? I managed to convince her otherwise, claiming its an 'electric organ' which I guess technically it is. I hardly ever play it anyway, and mentioning these things only causes problems. It's like going up to a police officer and saying, 'Excuse me, but I just went 50 in a 40 zone. I'm sorry.' Just don't do it.

Thankfully there's nothing in my contract to say I can't have my guitar or stack of amplifiers, or 200 odd hard as s rock CDs, which i will endevour to play at every available opportunity.

Haha! Our last rental contract said we were not to bring, or allow anyone to bring any musical instrument into the house.

Didn't say anything about building them there...
