Hi everyone,

Sorry for the long absence, my block is coming to an end and things have been busy although I certainly have been viewing the forums when I have had the chance even if I did not post anything.

I was wondering is it possible to send money from where you are teaching back to Canada (for me)? I don't know where I will be teaching yet and have yet to start applying (I graduate in May 2008), but some places I am thinking of Ecuador, Colombia, Russia, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Palestine (if this is even possible), Honduras, Guatemala El Salvador, Lebanon, Haiti or Ethiopia.

Do you get paid in local currency, and if so, how can you send some of it back home? Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this?

It's pretty unlikely that you would be making enough in any of the places you mention to be sending money back to Canada!

But you should be able to carry out banking transfers from most countries.

Have you thought about working in any Asian countries? You may have a better chance making enough money to have any to send home if you worked somewhere like Japan, China, or Korea. Countries such as these usually have numerous options for sending money home safetly, though most cost a little something (some more than others). Options include post office accounts and companies like Lloyds TSB (Japan), among others.

The OP mentioned 13 different countries. Each one will have completely different banking rules.

I've wired money to my Canadian bank account from both Indonesia and Mexico. I've been somewhat surprised to find that the process in Indonesia was much easier and much cheaper than here in Mexico.

Just make sure you know the postal address, phone number and SWIFT code for your home bank branch before you try to transfer money through a foreign bank. They'll give you a form to fill in and you must give this information as well as your own account details.

Just a quick point. Not to do with the money situation but possibly a point of interest. You mentioned working in Israel and Palestine. Be aware that certain Arab countries will not permit you a working Visa if your passport shows any indication that you have lived for any length of time in Israel. Syria is the one example I know of, as it happened to one of my friends. I have heard of volunteer work in Palestine, but I would imagine the situation is the same with regard to getting a visa.
