Hello Everyone!

I am new to this forum and I'm happy to be here. I am also new to Doha Qatar and I am looking for work. EFL work that is.

Could someone give me a birds eye view of the different Universities and Colleges here along with the average monthly salary?

Also, more specifically, has anyone heard of the Ministry of the Interiors English Language Department? How is it? The pay? The class size? The type of learner?

Also how do I put my picture next to my messages so people know what I look like?

Jack Rabbit

If you want your picture to be shown under your name (left box):

1. Login to your profile
2. Go to 'Avatar control panel'
3. Go to 'Link to off-site Avatar' box and type the URL address of the location of your picture (your picture should be stored in a file which should be hosted in a web site with an address, the file size no more than 6 KB.)

If you want it under your message, type the web address of your image, highlight the link text and click the 'Img' button shown above in your edit box.

First off, I think I would avoid the large bold print, and most people use avatars that are NOT self photos.

If you want a overview of Qatar, I would suggest spending some time reading the many messages on this board. When you read the messages, you will probably understand why almost no people use their photos. Laughing If you ever plan to teach in the Middle East, I would recommend that you stay anonymous.

Another problem is that you don't give us any idea of your education and experience, so there is no way to know what kind of position you would be eligible for.

You were a great help Cobra! Thanks to you I have my face up for all to see! Now everyone knows what they're dealing with!

And thank you for responding VS.
I like the slightly larger print. What is wrong with it? Any technical reason not to have it or is it just aesthetics?

Now as for my experience I have eleven years teaching in Asia and the Middle East. Mostly in Asia. I have my MA in EFL. I have taught in all sorts of situations. Lately, it has been Universities and Colleges.

Good. So now put the work in to researching the wealth of information on the ME forums. This should answer any questions you may have.

With an MA and your experience, you should be able to get something at any of the national and private universities around the Gulf. Qatar is very small, so the pickings are slim and if you read the threads you will see that Qatar University is having a few problems at the moment. If you are Canadian, there is CNA which has good pay and benefits for Canadians. A search should bring up the pay and benefits for both of those places as it has been discussed in the last couple months.

There are a few branches of oversea universities around.

You said that you are 'new to Doha Qatar.' Are you already there? That may cause you problems getting a foreign hire contract. It is best to get hired from outside. Another problem is that I doubt any university level places would be hiring for immediate work now. It would be for next academic year.

I don't recall any discussion of Ministry of Interior jobs here.

Thank you VS for your advice.

Yes, I'm already here. I like Qatar and I want to stay. On the other hand, I want to work for a university because they encourage career development.

You mentioned that because I'm here already, I will have problems getting a foreign hire contract and that it is best to be hired from outside. Why is that?

Mainly because they can. It allows them to pay you salary only with no benefits. Their reasoning being... you are already here so why should we pay for tickets and housing. It saves them bundles of money. Also, most local hires are spouses with a husband who has a foreign hire contract, so they have a valid point in most cases.

It is an issue that you would need to bring up in any interview. Different employers have different policies. But, naturally their goal is to get you as cheaply as they can.

If you are up to snuff you should get an offer from the U of Q. The extremem individualism indicated by your insistence on using a DIFFERENT typeface indicates you are NOT a team-player. Personally I would not hire you.

Most teachers of EFL are not 'team players' in the true sense, but many work at it, for pragmatic reasons, save their jobs and keep afloat.

Case in point: at the Teacher Training College in Korea where I am employed at the moment - the individuals who work there are a motley crew made up of a bunch of young teachers (age 25-30) and a bunch of older teachers (average age 50 years) - and everyone does their bit to cooperate with the others, but basically these people are individuals who function decently in groups at work, but the essence of their motivation is more directed toward self-fulfilment.

TEFL teachers overseas tend to attract somewhat maverick individuals who could not or preferred not to stay home and live the rat race.

Another paradox is that you will see some teachers who are very outgoing in class and 'rah, rah, rah' with the students, but outside of class that teacher lives a life that could almost be considered reclusive. The class boisterous behaviour from the teacher is really just an act, and the true nature of someone can be deduced by how they spend their free time, and with whom they mix, if that is the case. And from what I have seen in many places, is that a significantly large number of EFL teachers spend a great deal of time on their own, and prefer their own company.

Greetings Ghost

Are you really in Korea?

People can be complex as you pointed out in your message. I pretty well fit in your description. Realizing that teaching is largely a collaborative affair, I have made sure that the people that I work with are happy I am there. Im not a push-over by any means, but with most people I work with on the job, I find that I rarely have to deal with a user. Maybe Im lucky.

Off the job, I have a strong family life and I pretty well stay with my family. For now that is. Remember I just got here. As time goes by I start making a few good friends and start being active in social events to keep my life rounded and varied.

Now over to Scot, I did ask at the beginning of this thread, if there was a technical reason for using a smaller typeface or was it just aesthetics. I didnt get an answer so I went on using it. I really dont think that me doing something a little bit different is going to hurt anyone. And besides, it is easier to read for some. In fact, I think it would be nice if everyone here used a typeface of their own choice, it would make the board more visually interesting. We have the options provided by the system, and we should play with these options. Different type faces convey different moods and feelings. It is just another way to express ourselves.

Now some things should be conformed to, like the image that we use as an identifier being under 6 MB. I understand why we have to watch that.

So thank you all for your opinions. I am getting to enjoy this forum.

Perhaps some of us are just boring. Laughing IMHO (and it appears that the board curmudgeon, Scot47 agreed with me) your giant bold type looked to me like you were screaming at us. I am old enough to need larger type at times, but I found it disruptive and hard to read...

It reminded me of my ex-students who thought academic essays should have fancy fonts and colors and decorative borders and kitties and flowers pasted all over them. But they only did it once after they found it that they had to re-do them before I would read them... it was obvious that they preferred to spend their time on decoration, not thought or proofreading. Laughing

So, obviously it was not for technical reasons, it is that professionally it left a bad impression with some of us. We did not interpret it as showing your self-expression. Just something you may want to keep in mind in relation to teaching in this part of the world.

Hello VS

NO, NO. I didnt mean anyone was boring! Please dont get me wrong.

On the original topic, there is a big difference between high decibels and a large typeface. One physically can hurt you, but a large typeface wont. And it isnt a harmful to this forum in any technical sense.

As for the kittens and flowers that your learners used, it sounds like you teach in Japan. Am I correct?

Many users on this forum use emoticons as you do. I never use them myself, but if others want to, its an option this system gives all of you, so you should use it. If you think about it, they come close to kittens and flowers cute little yellow faces that are the offspring of those two diverse parents, the yellow generic have a good day face of the 70s and the ASCII emoticons of the early 80s telecom era. Lets leave it at this. Ill use this type face, you use emoticons and we respect each others individuality.

This is quite large though isn't it? JUST LIKE USING CAPS, IT DOES SEEM LIKE YOU'RE SCREAMING TO SOME. Just online standards I suppose.

Maybe you can lobby Dave for a font size in between the two. Although choices are available like you said, they weren't intended to use with entire long posts. The purpose is a bit different.
