i've decided to stay at this school a second year.
it will be time soon to discuss the terms of the new contract. my current contract ends on july 15th, and its already been mentioned by the FAO that my new contract will start on september 1st, and i assume this means a 6 week period over the summer without any salary. i've seen a few posts here in the past where teachers just had the start date of the new contract tacked onto the end date of the previous contract, meaning no gap in pay periods over the summer. the contracts are contiguous and the pay doesnt stop.
seems to me that if i'm staying at the same place, it would be fair to ensure that i get paid over the summer. for anyone who's been at their school more than one year, and was paid over the summer while on holiday, how did you arrange this, discuss this, negotiate this...... ?
just curious. i'll need to do it soon.

Will your school have a summer camp? You might inquire about working it. Some of us are lucky 'cause we can get paid and not have to work while others are like you and stop at a certain date, then start back up on Sept. 1st. My school offered me a salary in lieu of a RT airfare (my final year will see me a one-way back home - - they pay for a RT every year that I return).
I don't know if there are any "tricks" to share with you. If you've already signed the contract then ??? If not, just ask about it. I don't think it's a common arrangement (unless you're working for the school) but obviously it's not unheard of! |

no summer camp. just trying to get the best deal i can, and if that includes pay for no work during summer, i want to look into it.
i know if i had signed a two year contract, or an 18 month contract when i began working here, i would be getting paid over the summer even though i'm on holiday. i'm just trying to figure out what the difference is between having a two year contract, and two one year contracts that run back to back. if the former pays a salary over the summer and the latter doesnt, i'm trying to figure out how the school justifies the difference. |
