As I know many of you speak other languages so will have this information on your CVs, I was wondering how often if ever you have been asked by a school to teach another language.
I have been offered a job with a school as a teacher of English but also as a teacher of Italian for beginners, as I speak Italian.
Has anybody tried to 'translate' their teaching methods and ideas etc into their second language, and if so how did it go?
Is there anything I should know?

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Frameworks for acquisition are essentially the same, so if you know he other language really well, and take the time to prepare good materials (your usual stuff no longer applies) it should be fine.
I'm currently working on the design of a TESOL style certificate for Spanish teachers...
Best,

TSSOL? Doesn't roll off one's tongue quite as easily as TESOL.

Yes and without problem. If one knows the subject matter and how to teach then...no problem. No? |

I taught a beginning Spanish class when I was in Japan. (In reference to another thread, there is a slight demand for Spanish in Japan, but I wouldn't say it was high) I was provided a US Spanish textbook which was pretty good, it assumed the students were English speakers, luckily one of the students did have excellent English. The students were planing a trip to Spain, so we stuck to strickly functional-situational language. They didn't have any real interest in learning beyound that. My degree is actually in Spanish, but that is the only time I've ever taught it. |

Foreign languages as foreign languages? What else could they be? It is unlikely that as a non-native speaker of a language you could teach native speakers. Anyway, many of us have English as a foreign language and teach it as a foreign language. I'm Zimbabwean and my G/F is Dutch. |

My current school here in Latvia is continually asking me to teach Spanish. They already have a native Spanish teacher but they've effectively wanted me to be a sub for him. I've always refused as my level of Spanish is upper intermediate and I wouldn't feel confident enough teaching anyone above beginner level. I can't even do those pesky rolled rs!
That said I am giving two Spanish classes now. One to my girlfriend (who will hopefully be coming with me to Spain to live) and the other to a teaching colleague purely as a favour. I don't know about others but I've noticed that here there is a big demand for native Spanish speakers and no one filling it as few Spanish want to swap the beach for the perceived northern winds.
As a test I put an ad on my usual advertising board as a "native Spanish speaker" just to see what the demand was like. Within a fortnight I'd had 17 replies. My English ads generally produce 3 or 4 replies due to greater competition.
In terms of how its went with my current Spanish students - a lot more effort. I'm quite short on materials and need to spend a lot more time preparing stuff. With English I've four years of experience/materials to fall back on. |

I'm currently living stateside and the demand for Spanish is also very high. I've been giving private lessons for almost two months to three clients and I continue to receive replies to my ads. I have two friends who are native speakers and they also do quite well. |

Not exactly- As far as I know, it doesn't yet exist as a qualification. But I and a few others are working on writing the curriculum for it, with an eye towards offering the first course in 2008.
If you're interested, I'll keep you posted.
Best,
Justin |

Yes, I taught Japanese. I used the same method, and it worked well. |
