The short answer is that there are very few TEFLers here in Malaysia. I've been here over 10 months and I have yet to meet one. They do exist, but from my count there are less than five posters on Dave's living in Malaysia.
Here is all you need to know:
1. Malaysia is a great place to live.
2. TEFL jobs for foreigners are rare.
3. TEFL jobs for foreigners don't pay enough to enjoy yourself.
4. The only topic of debate about Malaysia is if RM 4,000 is an acceptable salary.
5. RM 4,000 is not an acceptable salary.
6. Malaysian women are sexy.
7. It's more difficult to find a date here than in China or Thailand.
8. Beer is too expensive.
9. You can save money by drinking cheap hard booze.
10. Don't rent an apartment or house near a mosque. |

Thanks for that. Who do you work for Saint?
I've heard good things about CfBT, who I am thinking about contacting.
I'm not bothered about women because Mrs. Zorro will be coming too. I am worried about the beer though. How do you manage? Do you drink cheap, hard booze? damn... I think I may have been put off Malaysia... What rent do you pay each month? |

I work at a university-college in a Canadian pre-university program. I teach international business. I have heard about the organization you are thinking about, but don't have any info for you. I love beer so much that I just pay for it and try not to think about it. I have found a Chinese shop that sells big bottles for about $3 CDN. I have a nice new fully furnished place and I pay RM 1,300 per month.
If I had a wife, then I think life would be cheaper. Malaysia is great if youre making reasonable money. If youre happy with the package they offer then go for it! |

There are actually lots of jobs for expat teachers in Malaysia but you have to be careful. Some schools with international reputations do not live up to them here. Most are owned by business people only interested in making money. There are two new schools recently opened and owned and run by teachers. Both pay good money and one offers accommodation. And both need teachers. If you want more information about them let me know.
The beer is expensive in pubs but the local Chinese restaurants sell it much cheaper.
Malaysian women love foreign men, they don't like the local guys. So finding a date is pretty easy.
The food is good and cheap.
You get used to the sounds from the mosque very quickly.
The roads are chaos so only drive if you are very brave. |
