How many days can you go without booting up?
I am going on six days, at work anyway.
Am I lame? |

It's just too easy...so I won't even bother. |

It's actually an interesting question because it raises the issue of digital addiction. There are a core of users on discussion boards like this one who seem to spend almost every waking minute getting their 2 cents worth in. And canuck, you're one them, so I'm not sure you're any less "lame" than sweets in this regard. You're often funny to read here because you seem to take newbies' ignorance of the search function so personally! Like you personally have been dissed by some new kid's unawareness of the search button. Obviously, you're a seasoned vet in Japan and have little to gain here information wise - so why stick around constantly, and rather frustratingly lecturing people as to the benefits of the search function? Why stick around wasting time with people you obviously dislike, eg, sweetsee? Wouldn't you rather be reading a good book, or going out for coffee with friends or...?
There are others, like Glenski, who offer up grandiose, thoroughly researched tomes each time they reply. And not just once, but all the time! This has to take loads of time. Why not start an ESL consulting business and at least try to earn some income for your hard work?
And yes, I too use this medium a bit more than I like, but I can say that when I actually lived and worked in Japan, I rarely spent time online. I conscientiously avoided having a computer in my home, so only used the net a couple times a day via the staff computer. And in retrospect, I'm sure glad I was spending my off time going to onsen, sports clubs, cycling, hiking, watching movies, reading, going to noodle shops, and izakaya - rather than staying at home and replying to people like Precise all the time.
I'm back in home country, and I guess I'm online at Dave's more than ever now to get the residual Japan thing out of my system. And thanks to users like Precise, I'm very quickly losing my interest in sticking around here. |

Gee thanks. Now I know who dislikes me lol. No matter, just give me your residual so I can add it to my growing love for Japan. And if you don't like my posts, why bother replying to them? Are you that much in need of attention as to nit pick at everything that doesn't fit your POV?
As for me being on the computer: I work on the computer at my job so I'm on it for 8 hours a day. Sometimes the workload is very minimal or none at all so I come on here to talk about my love for Japan. User, no matter how much of a jerk some people think you are, I still think you're an OK guy(or gal). You could be a little nicer though. |

This is why I don't want to bring a computer to Japan, especially if I'm not in a big city, because I'm worried I'll spend too much time on it and not enough on the experience. The fact that I have a laptop only makes things harder.
Unfortunately, I've been somewhat addicted to forums for a while now. It's a nice place to have an intelligent conversation, especially when most of the people you know just don't care about whatever it is you do. It's stimulating in a way that being at a sports bar isn't. At the same time, a lot of forums are full of immaturity and generally abusive people who take their issues out in the anonymous wonderland that is the internet. Can't say I never have.
Bleh to charging everyone for everything. You get taken advantage of, sure, but it's just being courteous. I don't charge when I hold the door open for people. It takes less time than a well though out post, but it's the same idea. It's not without its personal rewards, anyway
Anyway, I'm really starting to wonder if I should bother bringing a laptop. Is it a necessity? I've been meaning to kick the computer to the side for a while now. Would save me a lot of frustration at the very least... bloody computers. |

Unfortunately, online poker has reared it's ugly head on my computer, and so when I've not got a decent hand, I read Dave's.
I am a sad individual - but I can kick the habit... I'm not addicted. Honest. I can win that money back. Just one more bet and I'll surely win. |

On bring it for sure. While it can be a time consumer (when you could be doing something else) it is also an indeispensible tool for enhancing the 'experience'.
If you want to really avoid things that take you away from the 'experience' don't get cable (or a girlfriend) |

Bring the computer, but don't get wired to the Net from home. Even markle here can't bring himself to deny that it's a time consumer. But indispensible tool for enhancing the 'experience' ?? ... I guess by the below comment markle means...

... 'Experience' - as in, digital stay-at-home porn addict as opposed to the real thing.
Seriously, all the computer geeks I knew who were so proud of their Internet connection at home, were the ones who never travelled, never ventured out, were reclusive and generally miserable people.
The "experience" is out in Japan, not in your apartment sitting behind a computer for hours on end, and to enhance that, you need to get out and experience it. |
