Sam-Song, where do you expect to find school students from paradise?
Of course, school students of SA, have parents, as any students in the world, I think, the problem with SA school students is more related to their cultural and tradition more than to discipline or school code of conduct!
Remember, you are dealing with school students, not college or university students. And the majority of school students in SA are brought up not to respect the normal worker (taxi driver, porter, gardener, school teacher, etc)., especially if the school teacher is/look like people from third world countries (Egypt, Sudan, India, Pakistan, etc). To sum-up they treat you like a SADIK, and you know what does it mean to be SADIK! Even if your eyes are blue/green, and most of the time, you will be treated like a SADIK , and you will not be respected. Because some of the Saudi students think they are above the law of good conduct, because in their mind, they think they are paying you, and you have to do your work and shut-up, and do not interfere in their behaviour in class (especially in private schools).
But, I will tell you something from my own experience, if you are competent, and straightforward and acting like a Sheriff, then you will notice that the SA students will respect you and do not mess with you! Try it my friend, do not be shy and fearful from any reprisal! If you feel you are in the right and correct way of doing things, then you have nothing to worry!
You know, try to watch things in the Circus; you will be amazed how an animal trainer can make/convert a Lion behaviour into a cat behaviour without any harm!! The same techniques could be used in your school! Dont you think so?

Good luck in your Circus!

The 'better' private schools in Saudi Arabia are among the worst places to teach in the world.

The students, and their parents, will view you as a not-so-glorified domestic help. Management will view you as an unfortunate expense that comes in between the parents fees and their profits.

Get out of it.

I have to disagree with my friend Cleo on this one. I have had friends who I have worked with so that I know that they are excellent teachers who respect their students. But their experiences with the Saudi private school kids were nightmares. They could regale you with tales for hours. It is why you hear of so many of these schools having 70% teacher turnover each year and often half of their new hires leaving in the first semester every year.

Shocking as it may be coming from me, I agree with 007 on this one. Many of the boys especially do arrive in school and treat the teachers and staff just as their parents or other family members (mis)treat their servants at home. Of course, not all of them, but it doesn't take many with this attitude to turn the atmosphere of the classroom bad. There is also the fact that in most Arab families the boy child is 'king' and spoiled rotten. Laughing

Given this, it takes an outstanding teacher to gain control and turn the tide. It is also the reason that many of us have confined ourselves to teaching at university level. The worst of them don't make it to university. Most of those that make it do grow up and sometimes the worst problem student in first semester foundations EFL ends up a model student by the end that first year.

Samsong... I don't think there are any cures for your situation. The best advice may be to improve your credentials so that you have the option to get into the better international schools or move up to university.

Lighten up a tad. I was simply suggesting that someone with the writing 'style' of the OP may not be the anyone's idea of a dream teacher.

Personally, I wouldn't work in a private school in the Gulf if you paid me SR20,000 a month. OK, maybe if you paid me SR20,000 a month.

Right on. I worked for 3 years in 2 private schools in SA, and I have also seen students (in and out of class) of at least 10 other private schools during visits for interviews, including teaching a class as part of the application process. They are all the same, and nearly all the ones that misbehave are Arabs. The South Asian students tend to be well-behaved and/or shy. The Arab students are boorish, loud, arrogant, and utterly disrespectful. The worst are Egyptians (big surprise there, huh?!), Lebanese, and Palestinians (and Saudis, if teaching in a Saudi private school). Horrible, horrible, horrible.

But in that -- in what I quoted -- lies the key, for controlling them, and for not letting them get to you.

They revel in making you burn in anger and fury, and in getting your blood pressure to rocket. If you don't let them get to you, and simply ignore their misbehavings in class as if you didn't even see/hear them, they will ultimately fall in line. Sure, they will try harder, and harder, until they can see you burn. But if you succeed in keeping your cool, they will give up and fail, and you win.

I haven't quite mastered that as a general tactic, but I have used it with success on specific occasions.

And that tactic doesn't work with all unruly students. Some really are Students From Hell, and nothing will ever work for them. They should be thrown into boot camp and made to become a human being.

As for students in public schools here (Saudis, of course), all you have to do is pick up the Arab News and keep an eye on the Newsmakers/Sidelights on the back page to read stories of teachers being beaten by students, parents, uncles, etc, a lot of times because of bad grades! They are truly animals, and I have no clue how this country will forge ahead with native people like that. Who is going to work in these upcoming multi-multi-billion dollar "Economic Cities" that the King has ordered to be built? These animals?

For what it's worth ... I don't think the problem mentioned here is specific to the Kingdom. Walk into any classroom anywhere in the world and you're likely to encounter this situation (and, for all the current shouting and roaring about present day classroom anarchy and declining standards of politeness, respect etc, I suspect it's always been like this). What counts is experience. Every teacher remembers his/her first few years in the profession with anything but fondness. But, little by little, maybe after five years, you learn a strategy or the tactics that work when it comes to dealing with the most recalcitrant class. Immediate isolation of offenders, turning the rest of the class aginst them, cold bursts of anger or sarcasm that you can switch on and off at will, a sense of imposed control and self-possession. Above all, a sense of humour and the ability not to take things too seriously. Perhaps the nearest equivalent is being a rodeo rider. That critter may be ornery, but you're damned if he's gonna get the better of you. ... I don't know if this has been of any use to you, but believe me; you're probably a better teacher than you think yourself to be at the moment.

Not all Arab students are what you have described them!!
You cannot paint all the Arab students with the same brush!
You cannot generalise what you have suffered with some of your Arab students!
There are some Arab students who are respectful, decent, smart, and behaving, as in any other societies.

Do you know Trapezius, you are using the same language which is used by some of Saudi students when treating their servants at home.
I thought you said in one of your posts that you were born in this land, the land of 'animals' as you described them!

Of course, the people from Philippine, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Arab countries, Europe, America, will work in these multi-billion dollar "Economic Cities! As usual!

Trapezius, I wonder if you can elaborate on these stories. I have heard of equally horrific stories about teachers beating the life out of kids. Bus drivers, male and female teachers of Arabic origins in particular seem to have a reputation of dealing with wild kids in the classroom. I spoke to one man, who as a child, spent an entire day hiding under the heat of a parked car on a hot summer day. He wanted to avoid his Egyptian teacher who was abusing the students on a daily basis. Although the victim admits to being wild while in school, I dont think it ever warrants violence and abuse from the teachers. Perhaps you can clarify if these things still happen? (I am keeping track of the seconds before 007 responds Very Happy )
