I'm coming from Seoul. The air is just horrendous here. I'd never lived in a big city before Seoul and I must say it was a nightmare from hell in many ways. I was just wondering if Nagoya suffers from the endlessly hazy skies like Seoul, probably not. I think seouls air is some of the worst in the world. maybe hong kong or mexico city is worse.

Seoul's got an awesome subway system, but in other ways its just shameful. the air is shameful, the massive rudeness is shameful sometimes, other times its funny. the way all the women wear high heels is just shameful. the pornographic hooker phone sex trading cards are not shameful. the beggars are definitely shameful. I could go on, but i won't.

whatever... just let me know.. do you live in a big city in Japan? How is the air quality there? do you feel like you can breath? does the air smell fresh outside? Or is it like Seoul where the air inside a smoky pc bong smells fresher than the air outside.

Nagoya is quite an open city with wide avenues and a number of largeish parks. So plenty of air can circulate. Summer can get a bit close but it doesn't take too much to get out of the city.

I didn't notice too much of a problem. Granted I wasn't there long, but still it didn't seem to bother me at all.

Obviously you've never been to China. Seoul is clean. Japan is pristine.

Or Delhi, where the smog in winter can obscure objects more than 100m away and you develop a cough within hours of arriving.

I don't remember Seoul being worse than Tokyo, so I'm going to say that you probably won't be happy with the air quality in Nagoya, especially in summer when it can get a bit hazy some days.

I don't care how bad china is, it doesn't make Seoul clean. you must be joking. lol. Seoul is the nastiest, dirtiest, profanest, most shameful place I've ever been in my life and the only reason is because of how bad the air is. We humans should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing situations to exist in the world like Seoul, just my opinion. Like we can't stop breeding when there's 20 million people in a small location with no room for parks or trees and the air is unfit to breath and you can't go outside to get some fresh air. Its so nasty in Seoul.

I also got a new perspective on the effects of globalization on pollution, for example the yellow dust and industrial pollutants that come from china to Seoul as a result of all the crap china makes for the rest of the world, but why should americans care because it rarely blows all the way over to america.

It creeps up on you after a few days. you notice you're out of breath faster. you can't go outside for long walks expecting to feel great afterwards. Some days its hazy within a few hunded meters or less, probably not as bad as places in India but india isn't the issue. In India everyone is burning sh-it to cook with in the shantytowns. Now thats gotta be really shameful. , Seoul is pure evil.....lol. maybe not as bad as pyongyang though.

Seoul is the devil...Soul of Asia my a-ss . And if you notice all their tourism marketing, the pictures show clear blue skies, what a lie. They probably wait for the one clear day of the year and then take all the tourism pictures for that year. Its really deceptive advertising.

well I spent about 6 weeks there with my previous ill-fated job. I couldn't take it. I am admitedly more sensitive to air pollution than the average person.

before that I worked for about a year in jeju. Jejus air is wonderful. Yes it was my first time in a big city. However, you know what? afterwards i spent a few weeks in Taiwan and Taipei's air is much better than Seoul's air. People like to talk about how dirty Taiwan is, I found Seoul to be way worse than Taipei.


I just don't think people that choose to live in Seoul value their health very much, because having clean air to breath is pretty important to health, in my opinion.

RawFoodDan, I've lived in Nagoya for the last year.
I laughed a bit, because almost all of the problems you described in Seoul are also problems in Nagoya... including the hooker business cards (complete with pedophile photos) on almost every public phonebooth.

One other poster mentioned Nagoya's wide streets. It's true, Nagoya has wide, straight streets-- and also has the highest death-by-traffic-accident-per-capita rate of any city in Japan. My Japanese friends speculate that this is because the wide, straight streets tempt drivers to hit the gas pedal a bit too hard.

I was intrigued to hear about the exczema problem being tied to air pollution. I've had bothersome exczema the past year, but never tied it to the air here.

re: life in Nagoya: Think "big, endless city". Really, even the suburbs are city-like. By the time you reach country, you're out of the whole prefecture. (Nagoya is, by population, one of the top cities in Japan.)

I found the congestion, tall buildings, homeless people, hooker-cards-in-phonebooths, chilly politeness and social distancing, and rampant mafia ###holes so compelling awful that this month, I'm leaving Japan with no regrets....after 6 years in other parts of Japan, and one year in Nagoya.

The only difference from Seoul will be, I think, that the people are more polite here-- but this does NOT mean they'll be friendly.
