Hello newbies ! I have just heard about opportunities in Oman for getting some teaching experience - paid flights and accomo but no salary - I suppose it would be good to get some overseas experience for those new graduates out there.

Oman is great but it will be hot in June - good diving and sights to see as well.

It is a friend who runs a language institute ( reputable ) and has been here for 5 years or so - PM me if you want some more details or his email.

regards,
omanized

ps...yes, Oman is safe, very friendly blah blah - really, it is !

Are you saying you don't know the salary or there is no salary? Laughing

What about visas, or is this a sneaky way to get free labor and work illegally?

Well, I don't know about free labor if the tickets and accomo are paid - I know that Muscat is expensive to rent in and the hotel/apartments can be 1300 $ a month plus the flight can be the same. Other than maybe some food money, I don't think that a salary was on the table - still, the point being that it would be a very cheap way to get some experience in the Gulf - quite useful I would say...

Working "illegally" is just another way of saying 'short term' - it is as commonplace as prayer timings here in the GCC - short contracts, the first 2-6 months of long contracts, waiting for papers to be pushed - I will bet that every last teacher around here has been "illegal" at some point in their time here - I know I was for the first 3 months of my first contract and for similar periods for the others!

Anyway, there is nothing sneaky about it - summer is heaving, many of my colleagues are working outside of their college contracts at local institutes to make some summer cash ( illegally) and the other spots are filled by journeymen or housewives - better to have a TEFL grad with some energy than a tired old engineer's wife who is taking a break from the daily Starbucks life to earn a buck or two !

Hey everyone, I'm bumping this thread to help out my friend with his staffing for summer - PM me or just email him at [email protected]

Not much cash to take home but valuable experience in the Gulf which, if you are thinking of being in this game for a few years, can really be an advantage.

Sounds fishy, especially since in the Gulf they usually pay at lesat 1500 a month.

Pretty much ALL jobs in the Gulf will pay your flights and accommodation - it's the only way they can get people to work there.

So . . . to feel that because they pay those things it might be okay to work free is quite a serious misunderstanding of the employment market there.

The ONLY way to get people to come to the Gulf ??!! I would say that is a pretty serious misunderstanding as well - have you ever been to Oman? Are you the type that assumes everywhere in the GCC is the same as KSA? I can only chuckle at the misconception...

The employment market here has higher standards than elsewhere, hence the better packages. If you read the OP again, you might come to understand what the actual offer is - for newbies who don't have experience and would never be able to come here until 3-5 years in the field and with a post-grad degree needed probably. If someone could do that at no cost to them and possibly take home a little money as well, is that not an interesting offer ?

I have got a nephew coming for the deal as he has just finished his TESOL and holds a degree as well - he wants to get started in the TEFL world for a few years - tell me, when he applies for full-time jobs for Sept., is his Middle East experience going to be a help or a hinderance ?

And no, he is not staying with me, my wife wouldn't hear of it....
