|

Hello married people. Does anyone know if there is a time limit for updating my marital status on my ikamet? My husband for some strange reason has us registered as living in his parents' city which means a long journey everytime something needs updating. We came today only to find it is a national holiday and we have to get back to work tomorrow.
Is it imperative to update this? I am going home next week and will not be back for two months. |

Oh dear I have just found on some site that the limit is 15 days which have already passed (I am at 20 days already) should I expect a fine when I present myself tomorrow? |

Your husband can probably talk his way out of a fine. Mine did-- we registered ours over a month after the wedding. The guy was all set to slap us wth a fine, but they established some sort of Turkish man love connection, either liking the same football team, being from Sivas, or loving Atatrk and hating Erdoğan. |

As it happened we presented ourselves at Ordu police station yesterday and the nice man remembered me from when I got my ikamet last December. He never mentioned that we were over the time limit. Just asked me how I was getting on with my Turkish, smiled and waved us on our way. |

I love how things like this work here... Sometimes it's frustrating when the rules don't work, but I love it when scary sounding rules like this don't matter, and all it takes is someone taking a liking to you, or establishing some kind of relationship... |

Hmmm, any advice?
marrying at the end of June.
Leaving Turkey for a month mid July.(for Canada)
Passport and residence permit run out in September.
I was planning on updating everything in August. Do I need to have a new plan? |

I think maybe you should update your ikamet to married soon after the wedding as there is no charge to do this but you risk a fine if you don't and you won't have the nice policeman at Ordu to turn a blind eye.
I haven't updated my passport yet will wait til I go home. My husband was told there was no need for him to update the marital status on his Turkish passport so I guess there is no hurry. |

Since you're marrying another yabancı, do you even need to update your Ikamet? I mean, technically, yes you do, but how would they know unless you told them? It's not changing your residence status or anything.
But that's just me-- I'd go for the way that avoids having to spend any extra time talking to the drones at the Emniyet... |

that's what I was thinking. The new hikamet involves ticking a different box on the form. It doesn't ask for names or anything. |
