Could members write about the benefits that are offered by the various colleges and Universities in Abu Dhabi so that I can compile them into one document and then put this on to the forum so that an easy comparison can be made rather than trying to search through endless posts.

Benefits would be:
Housing allowances Single, Couple, Couple with kids
Education Allowance Per child or to maximum of
Salary starting points for newly arrived and increments
Utility bills
Health insurance
Other important benefits

By doing this it is then a lot easier to compare benefits and to change the information if colleges up the limits.

I can tell you what the Petroleum Institute paid when I left in 2004:
Salary Dh 15,000/mo; at that time no talk of increments
School allowance 25,000
Housing allowance for family of 3, 90,000
Furniture allowance, 48,000 up front
Utilities paid (except phone)
Company clinic provided as well as government hospitals
7 weeks summer vacation, Ramadan and Hajj one week each, two-week semester break

HCT will offer starting salary averaging probably about 12,500 would be my assessment from what others have said
Housing allowance in ABU DHABI is probably close to 90,000 now but I am speculating; current HCT-ers will know better
Furniture allowance probably still 30,000
Utilities NOT paid generally speaking.
Vacations--similar

Hope this helps as a basic starter.

HCT
In Abu Dhabi, rent for family is Dh85000.
No utilities.
Health insurance for employee and family.
Furniture allowance is Dh 30000, one off.
Education: up to 80000 per family, after that HCT will pay 50%
Flights [cash] for employee, spouse and up to 3 children

I'm pretty sure the PI stopped giving utilities a couple of years ago. Housing for a family is more than HCT, maybe 110000??
Education fees less than HCT, also not quite sure how much.
PI used to get subsidised membership of a health club, think this has also gone.

this is what the ECAE offered my wife. Remember ECAE is located in abu dhabi.

Salary (range from $44k US per year to $48K, and Ph.D up to $52k)

Housing Allowance 120,000 per annum

Furniture Allowance 30,000

Transportation Allowance 1200 per month

Medical Insurance Family

Education Allowance 60,000 (20,000/child Max. 3 children)

Vacation 40 working days per year

Ticket Economy return ticket to USA

that is the ECAE package for a family.

The school fees paid to employees of HCT and ECAE is worth comparing - if you have 3 children at senior school at either ACS or BSAK, school fees will be around Dh 130,000. As I said, HCT will pay 50% of the Dh50,000 excess in that scenario. If ECAE will only pay dh60,000 total, then that's a lot to pay out of your own pocket.
Life is much cheaper without kids!!!

here is the job package for the HCT.

Salary varies from 10K AED up to 14K depending on pay grade.
provided unfurnished accomodations
30K aed relocation allowance
Hotel stay of up to a week to get housing, bank accounts etc,
Annual travel tickets yearly for while family
48 days paid leave
full family medical
HCT will pay up to 80,000 aed for education outright, and then anything over the 80k is 50%
and one month salary bonus as completion of contract per year employed.

Hakbs... I think the HCT has better benefits package. ECAE has better salary, but if you have kids to put in school in abu dhabi, then what you get from the better salary goes to paying for your kids to go to school.

And it appears that HCT is better organized (well they have been around longer and know the ropes) and is trying to make any instructor who come have a soft landing. (meeting at the airport, staying at a hotel until the right accomodations can be found, and doing most of the leg work.) Haven't heard ANYTHING from ECAE about those issues.

as to your other point Hakbs..

I know several teachers who have 3 kids in high school who are teachng abroad because they can actually afford it, unlike trying to make a livingin the states with an MA in TESL.

Remember the real benefits of teaching abroad, free housing, airfare, relocaiton allowances etc... if you factor that in and compare it to the US, you need to make about 70K US a year to afford it (on one income, and that is being very frugal), or about $100k a year to actually cover lots of the stuff we teachers get.

I could easily see several people with multiple kids coming to the UAE to teach, and the fact that ECAE does not do anything above the 60,000 mark, means many larger families may turn down positions at ECAE because when they factor in the cost of the education over and above what ECAE pays, they will actually make more money at other locations.

I think ECAE pays up to Dhs 80,000 for the education allowance.

Does anyone know when new teachers start working at the ECAE?

When will be the deadline for the application?

Which documents should be notarized? original documents or copies ?

Hey Buur.

Unless the ECAE changed their allowances in the last 3 days, then no. They only cover up to 60,000 AED for 3 kids max.

Mind you that is the offer they sent via the internet
