Anyone with information on these colleges especially at Sur, Ibri and Salalah? Is a basic salary of RO 568 +RO150 for housing and RM119 for utilities a fair salary? I have an MA and TESOL cert with more than 10 years experiences in Turkey and London and although the teaching post is not for English is it a fair salary? Any advice much appreciated. |

Zaylasis, that is a ridiculously low package for an MA.

What is the teaching post you have applied for and with whom?

JOb was advertised as Senior Lecturer of Public Relations but the initial letter of Offer was Associated Instructor with grade 2. Getting very confused here. I have an MA but 7 years experience as english teacher in Istanbul and more than 10 years experience in PR. Was is th going rate for a senior lecturer? |

The problem may be that if the MA is in TEFL, they are not giving you credit for it since it is an unrelated field.
But Duffy is correct, this is a terrible salary for an MA holder. Teach TEFL with your MA and you would get at least another 200 OR per month!!

As far as I know, even the salaries for BAs are higher than that. Is it through a recruiter? I was hired through CfBT, and the salary for MA holders (teaching English) for the coming term will be 1000 + accommodation.

Didn't know that there were recruiters! I was interviewd by the Head of Department and an Omani. Outside the room were two guys..one from the embassy and another young man who gave out the initial letter of offer. Not sure who everyone was but the interviewers didn't want to talk salaries or terms which seemed a bit odd to me. Thanks for eveyone's advice..looks like they were looking for cheap labour! |

When computing salaries in Oman, you may be told 'senior' lecturer... but most of us with MAs have the same salary, no matter how many years we have taught. However, one man, with a Masters, somehow managed to get 200 OR (Omani Riyals) more than any other teacher. How he did this is still a mystery.
The only real difference is between those with a Bachelors and those with Masters. From what I've seen, six years in Oman, is that teaching years seem to have little impact on salary.
The lower salaries reflects CfBT and Hawthrone taking a larger cut from the Ministry.
The Ministry-employed teachers received a 15% raise this year. For people with Masters, this was about 85 OR monthly x 2.6 = somewhere about $215 a month. CfBT and Hawthrone teachers did not get this raise, although they lobbied for it.
BIG HOWEVER: The schools were short on Communications teachers this year, a first-year course taught in English. Next year, first and second year students will be taking courses all in English, so they may be hiring teachers in PR fields, and not 'English Language Instructors'.
Yes, as another poster said, the basic salary for Ministry-hired language instructors, including the housing and other incidental allowances, is about 1,000 per month, or US $2,600 a month. |

HMM interesting Zola6666. The letter of offer stated RO520 per month and the guy wrote +48 so I wonder where RO32 went if indeed Ministry gives RO80 raise for its teachers. And yes, they advertised for Public relations and other Communication subjects and at the interview they were talking about curriculum development. Thanks for the insight on how teachers are paid. I guess the scenery for which Oman is famous for is what compensates teachers. |

CfBT teachers will be getting the 15% raise in the next academic year. This year would have been nice, of course... There's just been a bit of double-speak about who we actually work for. (Apparently we only work for the Ministry when they want us to do things and follow their policies!)
