is this a terrible time to take a vacation there? i'm thinking about going for a week, to escape my indentured servitude in the rok. would this be a prohibitively expensive idea? anyone know what kind of hostel/hotel/living expenses i might be looking at for 6-7 days?

Golden Week is usually a terrible time to travel as things are often more expensive than usual or simply crowded with tourists. I don't know about Miyakojima, specifically. When are you thinking of going there? This week would probably be the worst time to go.

Sorry, I didn't realize.

Ah, the first week in August is also not such a great time to travel either. Hopefully you can miss Obon, which is a very busy time and takes place in the middle of August

the way it looks now, i'd be leaving miyakojima by the 4th or 5th of august, so i should be out 9 or so days prior to the beginning of obon. it seems like this is also kind of a tourist "low season" for an area like okinawa. is that correct? i realize it won't be cheap, but perhaps it might be cheaper due to the season?

If you come to Japan before Obon, it will be fine. However, prepare yourself as Japan is an expensive place to travel. Have a good trip.

i've been to fukuoka before, so i've got an idea about what i'm getting myself into. i just wonder how fukuoka compares to miyakojima price wise (re: hotels, restaurants, etc).
