Hey Guys
Anyone know much about the video game culture / scene in Japan?
Apparently in Korea it's an enormous part of everyday life, and PC Baang gaming centers act as social hubs.
Is there a similar thing in Japan? Or is video gaming generally confined to the home?
Is PC gaming as big there as it is in the West? Or are consoles the preferred medium? Are the same games that are popular in the west big in Japan? Or are different types of games more popular there? |

Gamecentres (ie arcades) are pretty popular here. I've never actually seen a PC Baang in Japan but that doesn't mean they don't exist. IMHO, pc games aren't all that important in Japan. |

Surprisingly, so few have PCs at home. Nintendos are huge here. |

There are a few PC game centers here, but I too have seen some Korean ones here (in Shin Okubo, near what they call the Asian street area). |

Any idea how much First Person Shooters like CounterStrike are played in Japan? Big thing, or no? |

I don't game myself but as a passing observation I'd say no. Consoles and consoles networked to the web are by far and away the main thing. They also tend to be locally developed games rather than the big international ones. |

This type of thing is much bigger in Korea than in Japan. The WOW stuff is much bigger in Korea than in Japan. The professional gaming community is much bigger in Korea than in Japan. |

South Korea is not only a far bigger gaming society than Japan, but South Korea is the most online nation in the world, by percentage. Next time you play Counterstrike online just look at how many of the players are Korean compared to the number of Japanese online. |
