I was wondering what people say when they arrive at Costa Rican customs planning to stay one year. My plane ticket is for 9 months, so I can not conceivably say that I only plan to stay for 90 days.
Also, do they require you to show a bank statement showing that you can support yourself for a year? If so, how much do you need to have?
Thanks!

You can only stay legally, as a tourist, for 90 days period, as far as I know. If you have some Tico company backing you up you could concievably get your hands on a temporary residence visa of some sort, but good luck with that.
Do what everyone else does: leave for a couple of days every three months. Or, overstay and pay the fine if you are asked to when you leave. Don't ask me how much it will be because I don't know. You will also be running a slight risk of being picked up in a police raid and thrown out, but that's, well, a slight risk with the emphasis on slight. |

Thanks for your response!
I was wondering what you actually SAY to customs when you arrive at the airport in San Jose. Do you say that you are just planning to stay for 90 days? If so, how do you reconcile that with your plane ticket being for much later.
Can you tell them, "I will only stay in the country for 90 days at a time. I will be leaving Costa Rica periodically throughout my stay"? |

It's probably better to tell them that you are starting in San Jose and then working your way through the rest of Central America over the next 9 months and then heading back out from San Jose. |
