What are the standard options for contract durations in Mexico? Are they usually for a year? Sometimes less? At universities they often go by term, right? What about at private language schools? Are they always one year? Also, what is the contract length requirement for an FM3?
Thanks a lot ..... Mep |

I at a private language school. When I was hired the director said they would sponsor me for an FM3, but they expected me to work full time (25 to 35 hours a week including Saturday) and stay for a year. Early on I was told I would have to sign a contract after I got the FM3, but nothing ever came of it after that. |

In my experience of private institutions, the contract, if any, is often open ended. Most want you to commit for at least a year, but if you want to leave, there is little they can do except give you a bad reference.
One place I went (IBI) wanted me to sign a pagar for $25000 for "training" ! Avoid like the plague! |

At the university where I teach, teachers are asked to stay for one year, and are given a 6-month contract initially. Unless one is grossly incompetent, another 6-month contract is offered after that. After one year, the language teachers have a choice of either going through the process of definitividad for permanent tenure, or signing another one-year contract. |
