Hey there,

Im currently teaching in South Korea. At the end of my contract I'd like to move to another country and I have been thinking of the middle east.
A few questions.
1. I have a BA (Education studies) with majors in Special Education - will this get me a job in the middle east
2. What is the average pay like for an ESL teacher
3. Whats the living standards like?

Comments would be greatly appreciated

regards!

Some - but not all - employers expect a TEFL certificate or diploma. If you are serious about a decent job here you should get one.

Questions 2 and 3 are far too general for anyone to answer in a meaningful way, and besides have been dealt with several times on this page already. Use the search function - that's what it's for.

With your qualifications, you'll probably get a job in KSA, though perhaps not one of the better ones. The third level colleges generally require someone with relevant (ie university) experience and a relevant MA. Of course, what they 'require' and what they get are often too different things, and frequently people are taken on who do not meet the supposed minimum requirements. However, I do think you'll need some kind of EFL certification unless you want one of the grim language school gigs. An MA would be even better, but obviously that is a bigger undertaking on your part.

thefourblackbars,

If you are serious about coming to Saudi - and you want us to help you - give us a bit more information. Tell us a bit more about yourself and what you're looking for.

What exactly does "education studies" mean?

Tell us more about your teaching experience.

What do you know about Saudi? I'm happy to give you a 'beginner's guide' to life here if you know nothing about the place, but I don't want to go on about things you might already know.

Why are considering Saudi? If it's for the money (duh!) how 'faustian' are you prepared to go? Would you be prepared to do demeaning, mindless, soul-destroying work if the money was good? Or are you a conscientious teacher looking for respectable work? Or somewhere in between?

We'd like to know a little bit about you for our files / We'd like to help you learn to help yourself

Van, you are becoming down right helpful and, dare I say, somewhat pleasant. Blackbars, I concur with my esteemed colleagues, do a search and be more specific when asking questions so we can tell you what it is you need to know.

Thanks for the compliments Queenie. To quote Bart Simpson: "I please to aim."

If I, if I have been unkind / I hope that you can just let it go by
If I, if I have been untrue / I hope that you know, it was never to you

That's a good thing Queenie. It's easy to become too comfortable with our viewpoints. We're all guilty of that at times.

I'm the same as I ever was. Haven't changed at all. Have a browse around my back catalogue (highly recommended Very Happy ) and you'll see that I've been singing the same mellifluous tune all along. Perhaps it is you who has changed Queenie-pie?! You do seem to be more mellow than the pre-hiatus Queen of Sheba.

Don't get me wrong, though:
I might be great tomorrow, but hopeless yesterday
