What is there to do in Japan when you're not at work. Are there a lot of bars, clubs, restaurants, etc... Are there a lot of historic sites, recreational areas, theme parks, etc... Is it possible to have decent fun in Japan and to travel the country without spending all your monthly income? If so, how?

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
The same as you would in your home country.

Again, for more specific information, read the forum and use the search function. Rolling Eyes

You might also want to look at JNTO web site http://www.jnto.go.jp/ or the Lonely Planet site www.lonelyplanet.com . LP has a discussion group called Thorn Tree.

Sorry to sound like a jerk, but how can someone ask if Japan has lots of restaurants and historic sites? Think about what you just asked. Tell me one country without a lot of restaurants.

On second thought, with 130 million people, you should see the massive lineup at lunchtime at the only 2 places to eat. They come from all around, what a traffic jam. That is even with a reservation made 5 years in advance. Laughing

Yeah, that is a funny question. Tokyo is a city of 20 million people. How could there not be a lot of bars, clubs and restaurants in Tokyo alone? Japanese cuisine is pretty famous it had to develop somewhere. There are restaurants on every block, even in the suburbs. Japanese love drinking, generally speaking. Bars all over the place.

Japan is a nation of theme park lovers- yes there are theme parks.

Historical sites? Of course, although due to earthquakes and wars many are modern reconstructions.

It is actually quite expensive to travel in Japan, except at the times the seishun 18 kippu is available, although that is a slow way to travel. Youth hostels and minshuku are reasonable, but all other ways to travel around are fairly expensive.

Check Glenski's links and also www.japan-guide.com- there are better ways to research things like that on the internet than asking here, assuming you were serious.

I'm borrowing this from JonnyB61. It seems very appropriate...

Quote:
Me when I was about 6 years old: Why Dad? Why? But Why Dad? Tell me why? Why?
My poor long suffering father: Give it a rest, will you. You're just talking to hear the sound of your own voice.
