In response to someone's question

Hi ,

My first reply vanished. I have been in Zhengzhou, henan 3 years. If you are thinking of coming to Henan, let me know, ask what you will. I don't spend much time on .

Internet computer...every school should supply it in your home. Three types of connection;

Regular dial up, extremely slow, and expensive. The phone company double charges you for every minute of use; once for a computer fee per minute, and once again as a phone use. You can get a phone card to ue as your payment. The school might offer you a 100 yuan phone allowance, but this will be quickly used up. You can not use the phone and modem at the same time.

ADSL...the absolute minimum. Make sure this is in your contract, and save any e-mails they send agreeing to have ADSL hookup. ADSL is a little faster then basic dial up. You can use the phone and modem at the same time. There is an initial fee for the hook-up ( which the school should definitely pay) and then a monthly fee (varies, maybe 30-60 yaun) which the school should pay. This is for unlimited use.

Kuandai /broadband/cable: Of course, much faster. Some type of fees as ADSL...initial installation charge, then a monthly fee and unlimited use. Many Chinese simply don't understand the difference. Some schools have it or are willing to have it.

PS ..phone bills..sometimes the school gives a monthly allowance, in my experience, usually not. Buying a phone card is much cheaper. Internet, they should pay the entire amount.

Contracts...what the school faxes you to sign...is not a legal contract. It is more a letter of intent. But you signing and faxing it is all the school needs to get you your invitation letter so you know you will be working legally, and to get you the neccessary working papers once you are here. SAVE ALL E_MAILS WITH PROMISE! Once here, you can start working without signing a contract if the contract they ask you to sign does not include all they promised
