I've been doing a lot of research these past couple of months on teaching ESL, Asia, etc but I haven't seen too many pieces of information on the interview itself? Or maybe I am just not looking in the right place
Anyways, I wanted to ask you all since you have been through the interview process, what were some of the important questions that the schools asked you during your interview?
Did they throw out the old "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"
What was the silliest thing your interviewer asked you?
Also can you give a newbie some tips on how to handle yourself during an ESL teaching interview??
Thank you!

I ask candidates various questions including these (listed in no particular order):
- Tell me about your degree and any previous work experience you have, especially teaching experience.
- Why do you want to teach in Taiwan?
- How long do you see yourself staying here?
- How would you describe your personality?
- Do you have any health problems that could affect your job performance?
- Do you have any commitments back home that could cause you to need to leave early?
I would then go through the requirements, expectations and benefits, before responding to any questions the candidate may have.
My only advice for the interview is just to be yourself, answer questions honestly, and don't be afraid to ask any questions if you have some. |

Other questions might be:
What would you do with a child in your class that was constantly disruptive?
What would you do with a child that was crying in the back of the room?
What would you do if an adult student expressed their unhappiness with the content of the course you were teaching?
Can you give me an example sentence from each of the twelve verb tenses/aspects?
How would you deal with noisy neighbors in your apartment complex? (cultural issues - and ability to deal with difficult situations).
Many more are possible. . . but mostly they should be looking at your ability to deal with difficult situations in a different culture, if you have any understanding of how English works, and if you have realistic expectations of what life in Taiwan might be like. |
