im just looking for general thoughts here.....

how far would 6-700 Euro/month go for someone living outside of Prague, including paying for an apartment?

is it enough money to live on, if not comfortably, then just enough to take care of food and the occasional squalid night out-entertainment?

thnks

600 EU = 16,000 (=/-)CZK today...

Well, I think you have to expect to pay at least 5,000kc/monthly for rent (based on my first-hand knowledge of rental rates in the small town where we own a flat). That should get you a small decent flat with basic furnishings - though not likely in an historic district. The remaining 10,000 or so should be plenty to live on and do some stuff in country. I don't see it as enough to save up or send much home, though if you're frugal, you could probably finance a decent trip abroad or two (by Czech standards, anyway, meaning 2-3 star hotel package trips).

If you go the small town route, your job options are obviously more limited, though daily living can be much nicer outside the tourist whirl. I suggest making sure your small town has good transport connections, preferably on a major train line.

Maybe if the school threw in a free flat that could help.

Hmmm, maybe I wasn't clear. I think 16,000 monthly in a small town is pretty adequate, so long as you don't live extravagently or have outside debts.

Hi Mongrelcat.
Apartment costs outside of Prague are significantly lower - even in Brno, which is the 2nd largest city in the republic.
Expats.cz can be a good place to start looking as so can be seznam.cz (click on REALITY in left menu and then English version to navigate yourself around).
All the best!
