[rant]

Being fresh off the boat (1 month, 2 weeks) and finishing about 10 job interviews, I am really peeved! I am fully qualified with cert. and exp. but wow wee wow wee!

8 out of the ten Cram schools and the 'so-called' cram schools really don't know what the hell they are doing.

Here's how it goes:
May rolls around, head honcho gets some $$ signs popping in his/her head. They interview a few prospective teachers, of course asking you to be fully qualified and legal, but at the same time, these douche bags have NO IDEA WHAT THEY WANT nor WHAT THEY ARE DOING?

Is it really my responsibility to come up with a 6-8 week summer intensive ESL lesson plan to sell to the moms? And even BEFORE I get hired for the job?
Should they not have a lesson plan themselves ready for me to use and abuse?

Next:
Mommy wants to send 5 yr old Ming Ming and Ping Ping to cram school or after school activities, just to get them out of her hair so she can watch the drama shows in peace and quiet. And why not?
BUT......does she know or care if she is being ripped off?

Next:
Is it mentally and physically feasable to teach 5 yr old Ming Ming Phonics for 1hr and 15 mins? Get real!
I tell the interviewer that this is quite difficult. I am quite honost with them and say Maybe 30 mins ok, but 1hr15min??
I told them that the rest of the time is babysitting time.
Am I wrong for saying this? Wrong for thinking this way?

Next:
One "lets jump on the ESL $$$ making scheme for summer" corp. has asked me to make 6-8 weeks of lesson plans using TIME mag, for Secondary schools for summer so they can 'sell' the idea to the mommy's.
Is this also reasonable of them? My free time? Even before I am hired?

AND also 6-8 weeks of non-magazine lesson plans.

Sorry folks. I'm really peeved and disappointed of what I am seeing here in HK. And also sorry for the Rant.

[/end of rant]

Your comments please.

Unfortunetly the private sector also harms the government educational sector.

Take tertiary education, Pre-associate degree programs vary between 300 - 600 hours at different institutions. some private sector (We will take your money, you study but fail) offer 180 programs.

So the lower cost curses ran by the undesirables, sometimes for unrecognized programs (Exempt as an overseas program), take the students on a 2 or 3 year ride to fail. They keep the money of course and as much as possible by hiring people without adequate qualifications or teaching abilities. The genuine institutions are forced to compete, cut cost, cut corners and presto hey! We have a whole viscous cycle of downwardly spiraling educational standards.

BTW, when you say fully qualified with a 'cert.' which cert.?

No, I don't think you're wrong in thinking that way, but if you want the job I think you were wrong for saying it to them.

Not sure how much experience you have with interviews but it's generally a good idea to do your research and tell them exactly what they want to hear (regardless of whatever the reality is). They aren't hiring you to be a babysitter, they could hire a local to do that for half your pay. Seems like you might want to try and use some nuance in your responses, avoid saying "no" too much as it sends out a terrible vibe. As for the 6 weeks of lesson plans they could have just been testing you to see how much you really wanted the job.

Hong Kong isn't like other parts of Asia, they're not as desparate for suitable applicants as they are elsewhere and from what I hear it can be quite competitive even for ESL jobs at cram schools.

Yep, won't disagree with you on the NO's and stuff.
Best to brown nose as much as possible, but being a bit realistic with them may help to point out their errors.
