Hi all,
I am a fully trained (B.A. Hons + Post. Grad. Dip. Education) new teacher that is currently working as a relief teacher this year to gain experience with a range of year levels. I'm a Canadian in Oz presently, but will be leaving in 2008 in search of other teaching pastures. I would like to head to Hong Kong, but don't know what my chances are....any advice?
I've been told I should pick up some ESL experience (although I don't necessarily want to strictly be an ESL teacher) and so have been looking into the Cert. IV in TESOL here. I have heard some mixed messages though about this as it's an Aussie qualification that may or may not be recognised in other countries (although I've been told it will be fine in Asia).
Sooo...the long and short of it is does anyone think I have a chance of getting a quality posting in HK, should I get the Cert. IV or should I be looking elsewhere on the globe?
***Please note due to both time and budgetary constraints I'm not considering CELTA at this point.
Thank you! |

are you primary or secondary teacher? What's your degree in?
What do you mean by "quality" posting?
Do you want to come to HK to make money? If so, then the NET scheme pays reasonably well, but not as good as international schools. You should check requirements for NET scheme on the EMB website.
An ESL qualification would be useful but not essential.
I didn't realize there was a Cert IV in TESOL but I guess it's ok.
The Cert IV is very useful and more recognized, I believe, if you are teaching in other sectors e.g. hospitality trade, office skills etc. and other trades.
A job in international school might be more of a "quality" posting if you don't just want to be an ESL teacher. |
