I'm an American university student teaching in Beijing and I'm going to go back to America in the end of June. I'm thinking about taking the fall semester off. I want to try teaching in another country in Asia and I think that now would be a good time to do it. I'm only 21 so I shouldn't be in a hurry to graduate...right? I only have one semester left. Can I get a six month contract somewhere? What about working without a contract for the summer (Korea maybe?)

One word... degree. You'll likely need it for most countries.

The Korean authorities really, really frown upon American expats teaching conversational English "under-the-table." I know some people who have done this - but I would never take the risk.

Get your degree, then go abroad to teach. Or, alternatively, go salmon or crab fishing of the Alaskan coast for the adventure and the money. Of course, that is a little more hazardous than teaching ESL.

If I were 21 again, I, personally (and I'm not saying that you should do this), would go crab fishing or sheep-shearing in Australia for a season.

Best of luck to you!

Lyndon
