I'm going to Japan with JET soon, and I'm really looking forward to it. However, I really like watching and following professional sports. I know it's possible to keep up with my favorite teams back in the states just fine, but I was still wondering about the pro sports scene in Japan. Are there any American football leagues or basketball leagues in Japan? Are they well enough publicised that a person who is very poor at Japanese could follow them? I'm going to Saitama prefecture, do they have any pro football (american), baseball, or basketball teams there?
I used the search function but couldn't find this information, but if some of you long timers have a recollection of this subject being brought up before, I'd be happy to have you point me in the right direction. |

I can't answer your question, but I'd like to ask one here...
Can someone tell me where is FC Tokyo's stadium located particularly in Tokyo?? |

Yes, of course. But they're nowhere near the level of pro sports back home -- especially football. There is a pro league as well as college ball too, neither of which are worth bothering to watch. Hell, I'd rather go see an NFL-Europe game. (shudder). No seriously. You don't believe me? My buddy went to watch a game (think it was college) -- they were playing ironman and he said that he's watched high school football games of higher caliber.
But the good news is, you can catch a LOT of NFL games on regular TV with cable, even more if you have satellite. Armed with that and a VCR, you will definitely get your game on.
Sports which ARE worth watching in Japan (live):
J1 soccer
sumo
baseball
Saitama is close enough to Tokyo, (part of the greater Tokyo area) that you will definitely be able to get your game on. Just talk to some of the veterans in your local AJET or go down to the local gaijin-bar and they'll hook you up. |

Let's make friends with Google!
A search for "FC Tokyo stadium" turned up the official FC Tokyo website here: http://www.fctokyo.co.jp/english/index.phtml?schedule=1
From that site I learned the name of their stadium is: Ajinomoto Stadium
Back to Google, typed in: Ajinomoto Stadium and got this result (third link from the top).
http://www.wldcup.com/Asia/stadia/tokyo.html
This site even has directions how to get there and a map.
Hope that helps. |

When you come in late July it's going to be all baseball. So, if you're a baseball fan, you'll never be found wanting in Japan. The media is full of it every day. |

Hey, if they're that bad maybe I could play for them! Do you think they could use an undersized QB who develops shoulder tendinitis if he throws the ball more than 5 times in a 3 hour period? No? Not quite that bad? Dang it! Ah well, I guess I'll have to keep my pro dreams resting in my subconscious where they've been nicely nestled since I stopped growing at about the age of 12
Seriously thanks for all the info though people. Did I put too many emoticons in this post? I've definately had too much caffeine today though. |
