Hi everybody,
I have booked myself into the ITTP course that runs
through July until the beginning of August. I was wondering
if anyone can recommend an "intensive" Czech language
course that runs for a week or two at the most.
As a side note, anyone taking the same course should feel free
to contact me!
Thanks,
Devin |

Hi Devin,
I'm not sure when exactly in July your course starts, but we're taking a one-week Czech Express course at Akcent IH in Prague from July 16-20. Obviously we haven't taken it yet so I don't know how good it is, but they run it prior to the CELTA so it sounds like they get a lot of CELTA trainees on it. Also, if you haven't been on expats.cz yet they have a listing of a bunch of language schools in Prague where you might find a bit more information about some other course taking place. If you want more info about our course, let me know and I'll be happy to tell you what I know about it.
Good luck! |

I took the week-long Czech class at Akcent, too, prior to taking the CELTA there. The teachers are pretty good at Akcent and they'll only usually offer maybe two or three people from their monthly CELTA class of 12-15 a position with the school. But, the Czech teachers were good. You'll do a few hours of morning class and then in the afternoon the students (there were 4 in my class) went with the teacher in the afternoon to, say, a restaurant if the morning class was on food vocabulary (a big help) or the Prague Castle, etc. A little practical exercise to reinforce the morning's lessons. It's just survival Czech, and barely that, but being able to read the basics of a menu and some of the stores around town does help.
The CELTA experience was pretty interesting. Never really a dull moment. Both good and bad. But, it's reputable, it's theoretical, and it's good for prospective employers.
If you have any questions about that, let me know. All the best... |

I must say I like the idea of eating and learning at the same time.
I will likely be taking the a course like the Akcent one post-ITTP. I should be able to have something of a handle on the 'survival Czech' before going in, which might be a bonus.
Thanks for the advice everyone.
