Hi,

Can anyone give me a brief lowdown on Nanjing. I am considering starting work there next Feb and want to get a realistic impression of the place from people who have worked and lived (or even just visited) the place.

Obviously, a key point is the expense. How does it compare to other parts of China - in particular the east coast big cities?

as youve probably heard, Nanjing has been categorized as one of CHina'a 4 "Ovens", meaning its gets hot, hot, hot in the summer time (Winters are, however, somewhat cold, at least for part of it). It is also considered somewhat of a 'college town' by the CHinese as there are many colleges and universities there and so you will find students from all over CHina and beyond pursuing various degrees. The influx of young people along with its relative proximity to the coast contribute to Nanjing's modern aura - you can find literally any western good you could locate in shanghai or beijing, and there are many bars and restaurants that cater to the predilictions of expats and foreign visitors. You should not have much trouble finding a job at either one of the unis or language schools that abound; i imagine pay in the neighborhood of 4500-6000/month, but now im just speculating. hope this is more helpful than some of the previous moronic and unfunny posts....

I lived in Nanjing for a couple of years, but have entirely forgotten what it is (was) like. However, I just read a feature article in a Shanghai newspaper (last week's Shanghai Times) about a man who stakes out the bridge everyday to dissuade people from jumping off it. The article says that at least 1,800 people have done themselves in by jumping off the bridge since it was constructed. I don't know if this reflects badly on Nanjing as a city, or whether these were people people who were or so nearly saved by the charm of the city, but who eventually, thought "Hell, I'll take the leap anyway".

I lived in nanjing for a year, and I keep re-visiting. it is a great city. There is a lot to do, both day and night, there are a lot of foreigners, but only if you look for them, and the city looks quite nice - still a bit Chinese, but 'used' to foreigners.

I lived in Nanjing for a couple of years. It was about 5 years ago now, so things might have changed, but it was a great place then. It is close to Shanghai, but not as busy. You can visit the bright lights for the weekend, then go back to a place you can afford to live.
Yes, there are lots of westerners but that isn't always a bad thing. It means you can buy anything you need and you aren't always being harassed for impromptu English lessons. If you want to pretend you are the only westerner in the city, just keep away from the university area and you can be as lonely as you like.
