This fall I will start graduate studies in TESOL. I have five schools to choose from: Seattle University, San Francisco State University, Portland State University, Simmons College, and University of Massachusetts Boston. I have researched these programs thoroughly, but I would like to hear from posters on Dave's ESL Cafe, especially recent graduates from these programs. Also, is there a difference between a program called Applied Linguistics and TESOL? It appears there's no difference, but I have been told that programs in Applied Linguistics tend to be more theoretical. Finally, if anyone has some pearls of wisdom to share as I prepare to start my graduate studies and new career path in TESOL I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

you'd be better off doing engineering. Confused seriously.

The difference between Applied Ling. and TESOL is that TESOL is an organization and in order to use its acronym, one must fulfill their requirements. It's like being a member of their club.

TESOL is an acronym, meaning Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Though several organisations use this acronym, none own it, and there are no particular requirements related to its us.

In general, Applied linguistics involves (more) theoretical background than a TESOL degree, and a TESOL degree is a (more) practical qualification in teaching.

There's a lot of variation between unis, though, so rather than degree title (both are roughly equivalent in terms of what they'll get you in the field, anyway) I'd really look into how the course content matches you interests.

Best,
Justin
