I'm going to be changing schools and my current employer says that I need to leave my Alien Employment Permit with them. This means that the only thing that I will have in my passport is a stamp that says see that book.
Has anyone had to do this before, is there some travel permit or something that I need to get from the police? They are new at this here. |

I don't know for sure, but that doesn't sound right as the pages in the back have spaces to fill when you change employers and places of address. My impression is that you take the book with you and the PSB and new employer in your new city fill out their pertinent information.
But then again I may be wrong. |

The school sponsored you, paying for your medical examination and your work visa - if you want to quit you are making them pretty angry, which I feel would be understandable. Maybe they even forked out your airfare one-way... Why should they have no handle against you?
Changing schools is not meant to be easy. You must get permission from the local PSB to do that, and the PSB make this conditional on you showing them a release letter stamped and signed by your current employer. This is not unique to China, really! We are guests here, so we do not have the same rights as our local colleagues do. I am saying this even though I might be sympathising with you in your particular situation.
Even Chinese in many cases need official leave from their employer! There still are some that have a life-time job, and that means they cannot quit on their own - their employer has the final word.
You must have some pretty tough reasons for wanting to elope with another school! |

No, no, no Roger,
It's nothing like that. I signed for five months and extended my time here for two more. I don't have gripes with the school. I've decided to go to a bigger city rather than stay longer in this rural town.
Anyways, I'll find out tomorrow what happens. |

Not every last EFL teacher quits - not even in China. Say your contract goes up, and you wander off so some other city or province? |

Sorry for the misunderstanding, Naturegirl! As I see it, you do not need to worry. Changing schools means you apply for a new job on a new visa. Your new school must sponsor you. Get your release letter, and the PSB will stamp it, then move on. As far as I know, you won't need your old documents. A new visa comes along with new documents. |

I got it sorted. I have to pay this school for the time left on my Z visa and the new school will reimburse me. |

As far as I am concerned, you are to have a release letter from the Labour bureau and the visa release letter from the police station where the visa was issued. make a copy of your experts permit, work permit and you can actually keep your residence permit.
yes, you are to return you work permit as you are no more working for this company. but you might not get your visa extended nor new permit issued unless you have the release letters mentioned before. i didnt have the visa release letter so for 9 months my visa wasnt cancelled, but neither it was extended - i had extended residence permit and work permit, plus expert lisence/permit.
