I have accepted a two year contract with UNIS Hanoi to teach EAL in their Elementary school. The head of the school has recommeded to all new teachers to bring EVERYTHING possible to apply to our programs. I am curious as to what you have found essential materials that are not available in VN. They limit my shipping allowance which requires me to carefully choose what I take.
Thank you!

What's EAL?

Why would new teachers have to supply the essential teaching marterials?

Doesn't UNIS have their own teaching materials and curriculum?

Interesting.. the abbreviations stand for EAL = English as an Additional Language... EAP = English for Academic Purposes and commonly used within the IB curriculum. As I am currently in the states, California refers to ELL and ELD programs. I guess we all learn something everyday.

I was honestly was looking for experienced Teachers in VN (especially in
Ha Noi) and some constructive input.

Regardless, thank you anyway.

I don't work at UNIS but I know a lot of people who do and I haven't heard anything bad about working there. The new campus is fantastic.

UNIS has its own curriculum and resources but there is flexibility in how you achieve learning outcomes so bringing materials that you like using is a good idea. It's also very hard to get hold of ESL/EFL books in Vietnam. They can be ordered but not from all publishers and they take a long time to get here. Bring whatever useful resources you can.

If you or your current school has got resources on a computer, you are a 1GB memory stick and a CD burner away from having tons of resources that will take up very little space.

Thank you for the response. I have the distinct impression that UNIS and the new Elementary School Principal are rebuilding this area of their curriculum, hence the recommendation to bring new materials with us to Ha Noi.
