So, I have an opportunity to work in a small city in Moravia. The school provides the flat, and the salary is quite good for the location.
I do have a few questions about a visa. Back in 2002, I was on a short term visa, so I have some experience dealing with the Czech Embassy.
Is it best to enter the country as a tourist (I'm Canadian), get all my paper work sorted before 90 days and go to Vienna or Bratislava to apply for the long term visa? Or is it best to sort this all out before I leave?
Also, I know I have to get a criminal record check from Canada, but I lived in the UK for 15 months, do I have to get one from them as well? The Canadian criminal record check seems pretty straight forward - just go to a local RCMP office.
I did take a look through some of the old posts, but I still had some aditional questions. Thanks for the help |

Well, it didn't take me much to get confused.
Canadian citizens do not have to get a home criminal record check for a long term work visa... correct? I e-mailed the Czech embassy about this and that is what they told me. Does this still apply if I submit my long-term visa application to the Czech embassy in Vienna? |

Sigma,
I have a more general question regarding getting a visa. I am also Canadian and am considering a possible move to Prague to teach ESL down the road. I gather by your question that it is possible for a Canadian to get a visa there to teach ESL, unlike most of the other countries in Europe? Do you know if a person is required to leave the country or can they get the visa while in Prague? I have a university degree from Canada. I was just curious if that is necessary to get a legal work permit in Prague? I am just starting the research process on all this, hence the basic questions. Thanks. |

You have to go to an embassy outside of the Czech Republic for a long-term visa. First you will have to get a work permit though, and that has to be arranged through your employer.
I have e-mailed the Czech embassy in Ottawa (and Vienna) and found them quite helpful. |

Dresden in Germany is also an option (and the nearest to Prague, too).
Your work visa might not come through in 90 days, though, so you'd probably have to do a border run and renew your tourist visa. |
