I have just been offered a job in Foshan, Gaungdong. After doing a search I haven't been able to find alot of info on the city.
Has anyone on this site worked or is working in Foshan now? If so, can you tell me what Foshan is like?
Thanks, |

Foshan is a little bit smaller and less "international" than the cities on the coast in Guangdong province like Zhuhai. Certainly fewer foreigners. You might like this. But you will receive more of the "hello"s and stares. I can't tell you what the job climate is like.
Also, Foshan has the distinction of being the city in Guangdong where SARS developed four years ago.

You need to check where in Foshan you are supposed to work; there is a smallish city of one million inhabitants that's part of a mega-municipality by the same name that came into being after the following independent towns were brought under its administration:
Shunde, Nanhai, Gaoming, Sanshui.
Foshan itself has a university but very few other potential employers (I once worked there for a training centre that was not operating above board).
Foshan has a lively and attractive town centre (with a noted temple and historic buildings) but it has little else. It's mainly famous for its ceramic production - which is rather polluting.
Shunde would be a nice place to live and work - provided you get based in its capital, Daliang. There is a polytechnic there. Beware of certain cowboy outfits (for instance Gang'an Training Centre!).
I have never heard of anyone working in GAOMING!
Nanhai has several colleges and other schools; I also worked here before. It's an extension of Foshan propre now.
From SHUNDE and FOSHAN there are direct buses to HONG KONG and to ZHUHAI and SHENZHEN; Guangzhou is just some 25 kms away from either. |

I hope you're not working for Helen and the Lingdong Training Center. They scammed me large last summer. Steer clear. |

What is the name of the school?
I'm just outside of Foshan in Shunde, a really small town called Machun.
Foshan and all of Shunde is very polluted. Not a whole lot to do in Foshan.
What are you expecting? You may enjoy it. It does have benefits being in areas that aren't as built up and have fewer Westerners.
I haven't really noticed too many stares by the locals (I've only been here for about 3 or 4 months). I Usually go into Foshan every weekend.
Like said above it is close to Hong Kong, Shenzen, and Macau >> by bus it only takes like 2- 2 1/2 hours. A good weekend trip.
If you have specific questions I'll be happy to try to answer them. |

Hi
I wondered if anyone had heard of a kindergarten called Hing Hing in Foshan? I've never worked in China before and out of all the dodgy sounding schools that have replied this is the only one that seems really great.
Any info would be appreciated |

lol, I just started working there 1month ago. The school is absolutely amazing and so is Helen. The foreign teachers are treated with the utmost respect. My air conditioner is broken? I make a phone call and its fixed that same day. My internet died? 1 phone call and 30 minutes later there is a guy in my apartment working on it. All expenses paid for of course by the school.
My apartment is fantastic. Comes with a doorman, a restaurant on the 3rd floor and a park on the 5th and it's 10minutes walking distance from school.
The other foreign teachers are fantastic, taking us to places like Hainan Island for May vacation and showing us how to barter in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. And the Chinese Teacher Assistances (yes you get one per class to help you manage the children and explain things they don't understand) are incredible. Just a few weeks ago they took us to some disney-like amusement park for the day, its sooo much fun.
Hey, you're not that religious guy who quit cause he had to play Santa last year are you
To the OP, if it is Lingdong I highly recommend it. |
