Hi-I'm a brand newbie looking to spend my first year teaching in Vietnam after I qualify. I've been told that I need to have a police check done to work in Vietnam...but in England it seems that only registered companies can apply for police checks. Am I way off? Is this a standard requirement? Can it be sorted out once I arrive (someone suggested embassies might be able to sort it out...)?

Cheers guys

I needed a "Police Check" done before I came here to Mexico, and had a slight panic when I heard the same info, but it was sufficient enough to go to my local Police Station in England and ask them for a Criminal Records Check. This was sufficient in Mexico..... Vietnam could be different, but maybe not.

I don't know a lot about the UK requirements, but I'd start the background check while you are there, and then get the police background check notarized.

The consulates and embassies of many countries have not been able to do much at all.

Harry G, much better to sort that out before you leave the UK. It's not at all true that only registered companies can obtain criminal background checks. All you need to do is get in touch with your local police force, of which there are 39 in the UK. Being from Newcastle, mine is Northumbria and they were very helpful. From there it's a simple case of searching for the relevant department and following the procedures. I'm sorry I can't remember the exact price as it was a few years ago now but I remember it being pretty reasonable. They just send you the cert direct to your address (or if you've been naughty come and hunt you down) and Bob's your uncle.

Hope this helps.

This link shows you how to get the document from the police to get a work permit.

Appreciate all the advice guys-it does seem like there's a distinction between a police clearance and a records check-and one is harder to come by than the other. I'll be applying on location (still very probably Vietnam) so I can imagine either may well be sufficient.

For anyone needing the same info-as above, you can get the application forms for a basic police check from your local station and send them off with a cheque for 10pounds-then it takes 4 weeks to be processed

Was a very strange feeling to walk into a police station for some reason.....

Thanks again and to anyone in HCMC-maybe catch you soon
