Jakarta Govenor Sutiyoso was visited by the Australian police recently whist in Aus, and ooh gosh. Now people in jakarta are protesting.
surprise surprise.
me thinks the protestors mostly are paid a few rupiah to do things like this.
and after all , the guvna is such a saint, not only from his illustrious army exploits, but his recent and current exemplory dealings with management and social responsibility of the jakarta populous.
all praise the jakarta govenor for his urban planning, social conscience and open government excluding corruption, nepotism and ..etc.
nothing like a good protest to make the poor and ignorant forget that the person they defend actually poops on them daily.
can i say "poop" on this forum? |

yet aother case of ssdd (same sh#t, different day). i know this kinda stuff goes on and on and on .... but we really have to appreciate that these people are between a rock n a hard place. theyve been 'pooped' on for so long, they either have just got accustomed to previous governors doing it (bar a great guy called Ali Sadikin; the longest ever serving governor.)
, know wats going on n can do nothing about it or simply, in turn, 'poop' on whoever THEY can. its so sad.
Yes, I'm confident too that these people were lobbed a few 100,000 rupiah bills to get out there. Jakarta = No change

If you watch the TV news regularly you will see the same faces waving placards and shouting slogans in E Jakarta that were doing the same last week in W Jakarta and the week before were burning tyres in front of whatever embassy they were paid to picket. I believe the going rate is Rp30-50,000 per head, less for schoolkids. |

The Australian Government has already apologised over this incident which makes me ponder why!? The great unwashed who chanted offensive slogans to Australians in front of the embassy which was only bombed less than 3 years ago makes me wonder who should be doing the apologising. Australia has bent over many times for these guys and given a pile of money and get nothing but cheap shots in return. Time to show some pride and rethink the balance of this relationship. |

This is akin to the local habit of (not literally of course) taking things from foreign people or nations (read: accepting help/aid/money etc) with the left hand and immediately smacking the same person (country) with the right. I have to say, it used to bug me until ...... I got used to it.

Yes, it amazing, how quickly the supposedly dis-organised rabble organise themselves so quickly to protest at the latest insults. They get their banners prepared, flags in order, a large group of simarly aggrieved persons on the scene, even TV cameras are waiting for them. Efficient!
They're not called 'rent-a-mob for nothing. I was amused that the governor felt that the Premier of NSW had 'over apologised' and a three page letter was not really necessary.
I wonder if anyone apologised to the families of the reporters who were lined up and shot, then burned a few times to destroy the evidence and a mock burial held. |

I doubt it. After all, in my opinion, theres no really appropriate word for 'guilt' in Bahasa Indonesia. 'Merasa bersalah' just doesnt cut it. Nor does 'Menyesal(kan)'.

first of all, i am not a fan of sutiyoso, but i feel that some of comments here need to be looked at a little more objectively....
1. urban planning.... the entire jakarta region always has been a mess, is still a mess and forever will be a mess. more than 60% of it is below sealevel and the city itself should not even exist, let alone as a capital city. preserving green zones will not stop the flooding!!! canals will divert some of the water but they cannot be completed if the regional /local officials do not get the ok from their people. sutiyoso is not allowed to directly demand them to leave.
the city was a disaster before he came to his office and will still be a disaster long after he leaves. did he improve anything in this area??...no, not really, but the condition that jakarta is in ( urban planning wise) right now will need alot more than the actions of a governor to fix
2. social conscience..... my lord, since when did any official in the country use any of that? doesn't seem fair to single him out for a social norm.
3. corruption and nepotism ....... tisk, tisk, tisk, we all know that these two things are the bread and butter of how things get done here. sure, we would appreciate it if they would do things a little more like the way they do them in our home countries, but they never have, they still don't and they most likely never will.
i think its unfair for sutiyoso to be treated as the rotten apple in this political barrel. could he do / have done more during his time in office?? sure, but i doubt that any of us have even the slighest clue how to accomplish a task like that in the city of jakarta without ruffling too many feathers.
let us not overestimate the actual amount of power his office holds. he spends most of his time mediating between different sub-districts in the area, trying to meet as many needs as he can in areas with far greater needs than resources. |

I agree beef that we shouldn't be too harsh with our criticism of Sutiyoso's general leadership (we should let his people judge him for who he is) but his sheer arrogance towards the Australians who were following the law as is applied in their country requires comment.
Indonesia has long argued that Australians shouldn't comment on their law as it is the sovereign right of their country but as soon as the law in Australia is applied the Indonesians display their usual hypocrisy by sticking their bibs in. Remember Papua?
Oh and today I read that an Indonesian National received 20 years for trafficking 955 kg of shabu shabu. This is the same sentence received by Shapelle Corby for trafficking 14 kg of marijuana. Fair?? |

if you think that he is responsible for many illustrious deeds then you are a bigger idiot than i thought you were....
maybe you should try to make a stronger effort to read the previous posts, paying a little more attention to what they actually say
so try again, chester...but this time try to put some substance in your post.... if you can. |

....ah, the pot calling the kettle black.
could you please explain how things are " not going my way" (????) on this thread???
still, could you please look at my initial post and see how i state that i agree that sutiyoso didn't do much during his time in office and maybe could have done more...if only minimally
and basil, excellent job of noticing the obvious!!! |
