My wife and I are being asked to open a bank account so that some of our pay can be direct deposited by our employer. We would like to go with a bank that is recognised island wide with low fees (if there are any) and ATM access Taiwan wide as we will probably be here for a while but not necessarily in the same location.
Should we assume that all banks are accessible everywhere we go; are there any that aren't?

Any bank-- or even the post office bank-- is accepted all round the island for ATM purposes. Network fees are cheap at about 6 nt per transaction. For deposit purposes, basically any bank will do.

Be advised that if you keep your money in Taiwanese bank you will lose access to it when your ARC expires.
Many Taiwanese businesses have special relationships with Taiwanese banks that allow them to give there employers secret bank accounts not reported to the central government.
Many of these accounts may be used for money laundering. Use an international bank if you must and keep as little money as possible in the account.
