as if there was no tomorrow???
I don't mean drink with meals, or to celebrate big events.. I mean DRINK as your #1 hobby, your only hobby, as the only way to have fun, the only way to chill, the only way to meet people.
Does anyone have other pastimes?
I meet too many "English teachers."
I'm seriously considering moving to another area to get away from boozers. What are rural areas like? So boring that you're driven to drinking?? |

It's a well supported social mechanism in Japan (though some people have developed the habit in their home countries). Personally, I would rather do physical activities or get together to drink coffee and discuss general news issues and politics, but that's me. |

I don't drink. My wife does. We get along famously. I'm her universal, perpetual designated driver. Her family loves me for that.
My friends accept me. That's why we're friends.
You don't have to drink to live, survive, and have fun in any country.
Pasttimes:
Writing a monthly newsletter (4-5 pages with photos) for friends and family.
Coming to half a dozen forums like this and giving advice.
Spending precious time with my family.
Reading (not as much as I'd like).

I don't drink, besides the occasional glass of red wine with dinner, or a Guinness or two with the wife while we watch a DVD.

I study Japanese.
I study Korean.
I take photos.
I never enjoy hanging out with other English teachers as much as I do with the locals. |

I've never touched a drop in my life.
As far as hobbies go, i cycle aimlessly around town during the day and play darts on the weekends.
WHAT A LIFE.
Also, I never hang out with other foreigners in my town. |

I don't drink to get drunk (well rarely)
I have a beer or two on a Sunday afternoon and during winter I would savour a shot of single malt or brandy as a nightcap. In fact it comes and goes, I'll go mad and buy half a dozen bottles of various things which last me a good 3-4 months and now I have half a bottle of Grand Marinier which I haven't touched in a month.
I think the major factor is age/maturity rather than location. |

When I drink there often is no tomorrow in that I am asleep and hungover for 24 hours after a major binge! |

I guess it's true: Drinking does kill braincells. |

I drank a fair amount when I was single, but after I got married, I cut my drinking down to almost nil, save an occasional night at the izakiya with co-workers or students. I found that just about everyone, Japanese and foreigner alike, respected my decision to spend time with my wife at home, especially when we had our baby. |

That's right NS and, with a new job coming up, you can't afford to lose either of yours, so no booze for you, My Old Son! |

"d....bags" -- now there's a pithy insult.
Probably 2 people born after 1960 know what they are, and those people have the good sense not to mention them.
Or were you referring to women? That's okay, then. |

I don't drink*. I used to quite a bit, but now I just don't see the point. It costs lots of money and gives me a headache the next morning. What's good about that?
*get drunk more than twice a year. A beer or a glass of wine here and there doesn't count! |
