YouTube surfing reveals that Canadian shock-comedian Tom Green did a special from Japan. I missed it because I was in Japan at the time (2002?). Some of his antics via YouTube had me in tears of hyper-laughter.

For those of you unfamiliar with Green's work, he's been described as shameless, disgusting, of bad taste, and so on, but rest assured, his disrespect for Japan in these clips is no less than the disrespect he aims at his fellow Canadians or Americans. He's an equal opportunity idiot. This is just one of the parts posted to YouTube, you'll have to search the others on your own.

Yep, Green is one of those love him or despise him. Takes a bit of getting used to. Very hit & miss. But if you go thru the other 4 parts, there is some absolutely hilarious stuff. But ya, definately not for everyone.

I found it actually offensive, having lived in Japan for almost two years.

I mean, I laugh at most things, but performing Elvis at a shrine in Kanto is just rude and cringe-worthy stuff.

Haven't watched the video. I remember Tom Greene from when his show was broadcast in the USA on MTV. Funny as hell. Kinda gross though when he filmed his testicle cancer ordeal.

Let's add the following to that:

Haven't got a life.
Haven't got any mates.
Haven't been to Japan.
Haven't got any teaching experience.
Haven't got any change for the bus.
Haven't got a leg to stand on.
Haven't got a clue.

Laughing

Actually, I've got all those things except for the one about going to Japan. And I've got two more things which I know you lack: Cojones.

Only two cojones?
Oh you poor impoverished boy!
How do you poor North Americans manage to procreate with only two cojones?
Is that each, or amongst you?
Make the best of it I say!

Hate to tell you this but those extra ones you got might be tumors.

My usually reserved Japanese companion watched the Green in Japan stuff and laughed hysterically. She asked me to reload so she could watch it again. But then, Green is really doing what alot of those crazed J-comedians with hidden camera do on J-TV on a regular basis. The difference is Green is a foreigner so his ignorance and cultural insensitivity is all the more laughable.

No, the fact that Green is a foreigner doing this crap reflects very poorly on foreigners in Japan, and confirms (even propagates) the Japanese stereotype that foreigners are barbarians who have no concept of good manners, don't know how to behave appropriately in society, and have an extreme ignorance of Japanese language and culture.

Let's be honest -- what do you think the guy who got ketchup poured all over his hand in Mos Burger is going to tell his mates? That he got pranked by a comedian? No. He'll tell them that some crazy, rude gaijin assaulted him and poured condiments on him as part of some twisted, sick foreigner's game.

When Japanese comedians do that kind of stuff -- it's a little different. They can get away with it. We can't. What do you think would happen in the inverse situation? You walk into a Wal-Mart in Vancouver and suddenly some Japanese guy with a microphone, accompanied by a camera crew, dressed up as a Wal-Mart greeter came up to you and started stuffing tofu and raw fish into your pockets??? Confused If you said that it wouldn't give you a negative impression of Japanese people, I wouldn't believe you...

Hear hear Jim.

Nothing makes me more angry than ignorant, rude foreigners who have no idea, nor make any effort, to learn other people's cultures.

When a Japanese comedian plays a prank, the victim thinks, 'well, he/she's one of us', so it's okay. Case in point, that funny-as joke about the rising seats in the cubicles. Watch it on youtube now!!

When it comes to jackass humour, the rule is: Japanese Only!
