Hi everyone, I've just arrived and I was wondering if there would be any interest in a TEFL get together? Thanks Carolynne |

Perhaps a dinner on Saturday? Open for teachers and students? MOD EDIT Just looking to meet decent people for good, intellegent conversation. Let me know if you're keen as I don't want to go for dinner on my own! TX |

It can be a little difficult breaking into a place like Bangkok as most people have already developed their social lives and . . . well, let me tell you a bit about newbies.
So many people pass through here and stay only a short time that the long-term people - the people you really want to meet - don't really bother with the newbies much until they have been around a while.
You might want to try to connect up with newbies at the TEFL schools?
Or - if you get down to Phuket a dinner and beer on the beach might be fun.
Like anywhere - bookstores and churches, clubs etc are good places to meet people if you are not a bar person. I met some very nice people by joining a book discussion club based at a book store on about Suk Soi 53 I think (when I was living in BKK). |

Right so I'm off to Suk soi 53 to find a book club... It's not that I'm adverse to bars, it's just that since I've been here the only people I've met in bars here are men who talk incessantly about prostitutes and have James Bond complexes (you know: loser back home, "the man" here). I'm here for three months but I'm not at a school so I have no collegues to latch on to. Anyway, if anyone is a "newbie" and is into intellegent conversation, please reply! |

Here's the URL for their website and info about the book club.

Hope you enjoy it - it is an excellent way to meet people. There are actually some quite decent regular people about - they just aren't sitting on barstools all day every day.
If I recall they usually have tea/coffee and some light snacks for you - and if you join the bookclub (a small fee maybe? and they are in no rush - you can come several times no big deal) you get 10% off on all purchases at the bookstore. It's been a few years so I don't recall all the details - but I do recall that the group was quite welcoming to newbies.
Look around a bit - there really are a lot ways to get involved in the community. BKK can be a quite decent town and you never even need to visit a bar (news to many people I am sure!). |

Umm... I'm not sure if eslcafe is the right place for meeting people. I'd even say that Thailand's forum is not that frequently visited. For meeting people, I'd recommend you to visit thailandfriends . com
It's a place with tons of friendly people and there is a section of events where people post invitations for all website members for gatherings. It's all free, of course.
I think you'll enjoy it. Just keep in mind that just like the overall foreigner population in Thailand, on TF there are many good people, but also many weird ones.
Cheers |
