Are there many people working on the North coast of Spain, in particular the Basque region?
I have heard that there is quite a scene going on in Bilbao? Are you currently teaching there and are there many schools?
This area does not seem to get mentioned much on Eslcafe.
Thanks. |

I live and work very near the Basque Country and have spent a lot of time in Bilbao. I like the area. The scenery is wonderful and many Spanish people admit that Basque cuisine is the best there is in Spain.
You may find the nationalist mentality a bit suffocating but that's how they are. I certainly enjoy visiting Bilbao and San Sebastian is beautiful.

I did a summer camp stunt for an academy run out of Bilboa, but I was actually located in Zumai. Scenery is BREATHTAKING and the people are very kind. They always seemed very interested in what brought a yank to the Basque country. It was pricey a few years ago (moreso than other parts of Spain) so I would check the cost of living to the salary offers. |

What a pity I just saw your message...
I've lived in the Basque country for 2 years and plan on staying a few more at least (in San Sebastian). The people are kind but difficult to get to know, especially if you don't speak Spanish (I do but I still find it quite hard). The weather last year was reasonable but this year it has been truly appalling... the country is as green as can be, but for a reason...
If you like beaches, climbing, walking and cycling then don't hesitate on coming here. If you like eating thenthis is the place for you too!
However, it's not a wild place where you're going to arrive and have the craziest time of your life. It's quite chilled but most people have to face the fact that you'll spend quite a lot of time in the expat community if you don't make a real effort to learn Spanish and go out and join some clubs etc to meet people. PM me if you'd like any advice. |
