|
|
Hey all,
I couldn't find anything about this in a search of the forums...
Has anyone experienced problems bringing pirated DVDs across borders? Specifically to Canada via the US?
Will they work in Canada?
I'm talking about a personal collection of 20 or so in a cd wallet, not thousands of copies and a label printing machine.
Thanks! |

I don't know about the border stuff but we have a Canadian DVD player and they work just fine in it. |

I remember something to the effect that you are allowed to bring 20 in with you, but any more than 20 and you could be fined. That is for crossing the US border, but not sure about Canada. |

I've crossed into the US with "blank" CDRs in a wallet with no problem. Some had "suspicious" felt pen writing on them. No one said anything to me.... |

They will work in Canada in the USA as long as they are good for Region 1. Region 4 is Mexico. |

I couldn't find the 20 item limit anywhere, but I remember it from a news story.
I did find this:
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/prohibited_restricted.xml
It says one copy of each so one would assume that if each DVD was different then no problema.
About region codes, any pirate worth their salt would be selling region free dvd's. I know making it region free is the default set up for dvd decrypter and dvd shrink. |

The 20 CD allowable is when you enter Mexico. See this link and scroll way down in the following link for the full info:
What You May Bring Into Mexico
Customs Regulations
..."Tourists are allowed to bring in personal effects duty-free. According to Mexican customs regulations, in addition to clothing, personal effects may include one camera, one video cassette player, one personal computer, one CD player, 5 DVDs, 20 music CDs or audio cassettes, 12 rolls of unused film, and one mobile phone. Pretty much every DVD player sold in the last couple of years is multi-region and will play either zone 1 or 4 without hassle.
If you have an older PC and the DVD is locked into one region, you can download software such as Remore Selector v2.2 (free to download from the internet). |

A couple of months ago, I was searching all over town for a Dora the Explordora DVD. When I finally found one, on the back it said that the languages were English, Spanish and Catalan . But I thought to myself--but it's a copy. The guy tested it for me, and on his machine, which was one of those portable DVDs with it's own screen, and it worked. When I got home my DVD player, which plays region one and four would only recongize it as a data disk. Turns out it was region 2 after all. I had two very sad little girls. The next time I was in Oaxaca, the first DVD seller I saw had no less than five different Dora videos--so now I have happy girls. I'm going to have to have a talk with the local guys about their selection....
Oh and on the 20 compact disks into Mexico. I first found that out when my plane was landing and I had 96 CDs with me (all originals) I got a red light, but the officials just opened my bag and poked around, they never opened the disk carrier. This was many years ago, so maybe they thought it was just a notebook. |
