Some Paino Bars in Tiapei employ Handsome Western Men. Some Room Salons employ Beautiful Western Women too. Perhaps the advertisement was meant for Tiwain William!

When I ask students who have had a few FT's in their life, most seem to be able to remember only those who were young and/or pretty/handsome. Then, I would usually ask the students what the FT'd taught them and the toom would fall completely silent with perhaps a few murmurs of "nothing -- but he/she was handsome/pretty".

When you ask students about their previous FT's, be sure to ask about them and you'll probably hear "handsome" or "beautiful". That sure says a lot about what kind of FT's most Chinese schools really care about, doesn't it?

In the East Asian ESL industry, I reckon there's a definite glass ceiling ("I'm just an English teacher" is what I'd say to a hot chick in a swank place who asked). But there's no frickin' bottom.

If enough western escapees were willing to, in the presence of gay Chinese men, teach Side by Side 2 -- in the nude -- for 100 RMB/hr *PLUS* a 200 RMB "nudity bonus", you'd probably start seeing ads for it on Dave's.

And then, one day, it would just seem normal... Crying or Very sad

That would be a mistake. Learn to lye, unless your 'ethics' forbid it.

In my experience almost any white guy in China (of a certain age at least) is assailed with cries of "handsome". Certainly I received such compliments almost daily and yet while I'm not too bad looking I'm certainly no Brad Pitt.

Many Chinese people like to give out compliments. Particularly as there seems to be a prevailing belief that foreigners like compliments...which many Chinese people believe and subsequently act upon.

The really sad thing was when foreigners started taking these compliments at face value.

Ever had a Chinese person tell you that your putonghua is excellent because you said ni hao to them? Exactly. Laughing

I've often been called "lovely" by my students. Gave me a warm glow all over.

I have always been ugly, and I have no illusions otherwise. I'm mid forties and thinning on top, and I have to suck my gut in to see my feet. Not to put too fine a point on it, I'm no babe magnet.

Imagine my surprise to learn that a group of students had described me as 'handsome'.

It is socially acceptable to discuss classes taught "Swedish style" by western stallions for the pleasure of Chinese men. However, mentioning western males using the same, uh, pedagogical... erm... methodology in a <gasp> girl's school? Man, that's bararic! Shocked

If you need some boosting of the ego then teach in Asia. As long as you aren't so hideous that you frighten the kids then you will receive compliments galore!

Charisma Man...alive and well and teaching ESL!
