Hello all,
I've recently secured a position teaching at a primary school in Mexico with only a BA and volunteer experience as a teacher in both the US in Mexico. The school's English director and I agreed that I should get a certificate program not only to be better prepared, but also so that parents of the school's students will feel that me being there is justified since I do not have a state credential or master's.
That said, what kind of program would most benefit me(and the kids, it's about the kids!)? I've got just over two months before I'm working in Mexico as a teacher, and I currently work full-time in an area where there's no night classes available, so I've been leaning towards an online program or one of those weekend courses through Oxford Seminars.

Observed teaching practice (OTP) is the number one issue - find a program where you teach REAL students (not other teachers) for a real one-hour class and get feedback on how you did. A decent course will have at least 6-8 hours of OTP. Ideally you also want a course that has about 100-120 hours or classroom instruction in addition to the OTP.
All of that is "ideal" - but if it is not available to you where you are - get what you can and get as close as you can to those generally-accepted "standards". Notice that an online program will give you neither OPT or inclass time. |

I agree. The minimum is 6. The place where I did mine, The Boland School, gave us 8 plus lots of practice by teaching the other teachers in our class. |
