Greetings, ALL.
I have two and half years' experience in Korea, a little over a year of which is with a couple of Korean universities, and one year's experience teaching Eng lang in an American university. In Dec I will have completed an American MA course in Eng Lit, and then Aug '08 I start the PhD course in Eng Lit--which I expect to take a few more years.
But I just want to know: Those of you with similar degrees, what does the degree, MA or PhD, get you in HK? I am curious about salary, working conditions, vacation time, any perks, etc.
Thanks! |

Certainly a PhD will help greatly with a uni position - as you know most positions go to PhDs these days. Publications will help. Masters will help with English Schools Foundations applications for sure, and international schools. I suspect you will get a salary increase in those schools too, but I'm not certain. Masters and higher degrees probably help in applications for the NET scheme, but sadly you don't get any more salary, even for a PhD. But you don't really need a higher degree for the NET scheme - the Dip. ed or B. ed. is what you need (in fact a PhD without a teaching qual will be useless in the NET scheme - as far as I know you will not move off the bottom of the pay scale). There is a bit of a shortage of qualified applicants, so minimun qualifications should be OK.
As for the cram schools and private schools about town, I don't think they are really attractive options for people with higher degrees, to speak generally. |
